May 2008 Teenager jailed for rape of girl A teenager from Ayrshire who admitted raping a girl, then having sex with another underage girl while on bail, has been jailed for six years. The High Court in Glasgow heard that Craig Black, 17, from Saltcoats, raped the 11-year-old girl at his home on 31 March last year, while she slept. After being charged and released on bail he then had sex with the 13-year-old girl, who he had befriended. Jailing Black, Lord Brailsford said his crimes “must result in detention”. At an earlier hearing, the court was told that the rape took place at Black’s family home in New England Road. The 11-year-old girl fell asleep while watching a film in a bedroom and woke up to find Black, who had been drinking, on top of her. The child told Black’s mother what had happened and he was later charged with rape before being released by a sheriff on bail. He then struck up a friendship with a 13-year-old girl in June last year. Police were called after rumours began circulating around the girl’s school that she had sex with Black. He was arrested and charged with having sex with an underage girl. The court was told that Black had admitted feeling “ashamed and remorseful” at what he had done. Lord Brailsford said he accepted that Black had been drunk during the rape, but added that was “no excuse”. He said: “This was a charge of rape – a serious charge. A charge of this seriousness must result in detention.” He setenced Black to three years and nine months for the rape and two years and three months for the unlawful sex charge. Lord Brailsford ordered both terms to run consecutively.
