BRANDON HASWELL FROM SALTCOATS SENTENCED FOR CRUELTY TO DOGS IN KILMARNOCK

Brandon Haswell, a father of three from Saltcoats, appeared before Kilmarnock Sheriff Court on Monday, February 3, to face charges related to the neglect and suffering of two dogs. The court heard that Haswell pleaded guilty to two separate charges of causing unnecessary suffering to animals, specifically two dogs named Luna and Loki.

According to court documents, the incidents occurred over a period stretching from August 30 to October 30, 2023. During this time, Haswell was responsible for the welfare of Luna, who is now deceased, and Loki. It was established that he failed to provide these animals with the appropriate care and treatment necessary for their health and well-being. The neglect included neglecting to seek veterinary advice or medical intervention for their various health issues.

Specifically, Luna was suffering from severe health problems such as emaciation, dehydration, and muscle loss, conditions that indicate prolonged neglect and suffering. Despite her deteriorating condition, Haswell did not take the necessary steps to address her health concerns. Similarly, Loki was also subjected to neglect, with evidence showing that he experienced significant weight loss and was not given adequate care or treatment for his health issues.

During the court proceedings, Haswell’s solicitor, Scot Agnew, explained that the neglect was primarily due to financial hardship. He stated, “You would have been concerned by the narrative and he knows that the penalties will be considerable. Financial hardship is the sole reason why these animals suffered. He had been working until around a month before. He lost his income due to back and leg pain and he had a significant burden on him, meaning he couldn’t take any steps to arrange medical care.”

Agnew further added that Haswell deeply regrets his actions and is currently reliant on benefits. He expressed willingness to accept any suitable disposal the court might see fit, emphasizing the remorse of his client.

In sentencing, Sheriff Murdoch Mactaggart described the offences as very serious, emphasizing the prolonged period during which the animals suffered unnecessarily. The sheriff remarked, “These are very serious offences. This was about you causing unnecessary suffering to dogs over a prolonged period. It is hard to understand how you could have done that.”

As a result of his guilty plea, Haswell was sentenced to a 12-month supervision order, a four-month curfew, and a two-year ban from owning animals, which will expire in February 2027. The court’s decision underscores the gravity of animal cruelty and the importance of accountability for such neglectful actions.
