COLIN THORNLEY FROM CANNOCK TO RETIRE ON RAF PENSION DESPITE CHILD SEX OFFENSES

In a case that has sparked outrage and raised questions about military pension policies, Colin Thornley, a former Royal Air Force sergeant from Cannock, Staffordshire, is set to leave prison in the coming weeks while still receiving his pension. Thornley, aged 64, dedicated 27 years of his life serving in the RAF before retiring in 1993. However, his past actions have cast a dark shadow over his service record.

In 2001, Thornley's true nature was exposed when authorities uncovered his extensive history as a serial paedophile. He was found to have targeted children as young as six years old, engaging in heinous acts that led to his imprisonment for a term of 15 years. Despite his incarceration, Thornley's release is imminent, and he is expected to receive an annual pension of approximately £10,000, a sum that has caused considerable public outrage.

The controversy deepened when it was revealed that the Ministry of Defence (MoD) had been warned about potential budget cuts of up to 20 percent, yet Thornley's pension remains unaffected. One of his victims expressed her disgust, stating, “It’s an absolute disgrace that this man can retire in comfort after what he did. I spend every day fearing that he will come after me again.”

Thornley, who was known locally in Cannock as an avid amateur photographer, was arrested after authorities received a tip-off. A subsequent search of his residence uncovered a disturbing collection of evidence: approximately 70,000 vile photographs and 3,750 videos depicting children being tortured and abused. These findings underscored the severity of his crimes.

He confessed to committing 22 indecent assaults and four rapes of children during the period from 1981 to 1984. Despite the gravity of his offenses, there are no existing regulations that allow for the stripping of a military pension once a service member has been convicted and has left active duty. An MoD spokesperson clarified this stance, stating, “Pensions can only be stopped for treason, mutiny, or breach of the Official Secrets Act.”

This case has reignited debates about the adequacy of current policies regarding pensions for convicted criminals, especially those with a history of child abuse, and has highlighted the need for potential reforms to prevent such individuals from benefiting financially after their crimes.
