COLIN MOONEY FROM SKELMERSDALE SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES AFTER ONLINE GROOMING PLOT

In December 2019, a disturbing case unfolded involving Colin Mooney, a 31-year-old resident of Skelmersdale, who was convicted of engaging in heinous online activities aimed at abusing a child. The investigation revealed that Mooney had been grooming a young victim through internet communications, meticulously planning a face-to-face meeting with the intent to commit sexual offences.

Mooney’s criminal actions came to light when he was arrested in May after he appeared at the designated meeting spot, expecting to carry out the assault. Authorities uncovered that he had been actively involved in online discussions that were both disturbing and indicative of his intent to facilitate child sexual abuse. The content of these communications was described as “frankly sickening” by Detective Constable Kate Molloy of Lancashire Police CID.

During the court proceedings at Preston Crown Court on Thursday, December 19th, Mooney admitted to multiple serious charges, including arranging and facilitating the commission of a child sex offence, as well as attempting sexual communication with a minor. His actions demonstrated a clear pattern of predatory behavior, which prompted the court to impose a significant sentence.

Mooney was sentenced to four years in prison, with an additional two years on licence, reflecting the gravity of his offences. Due to the dangerous nature of his crimes, he is classified as a “dangerous person,” which means he cannot be released until he has served at least two-thirds of his sentence. Even then, he must undergo a review by the parole board to determine whether he poses a risk to the public before being granted release.

Furthermore, Mooney was subjected to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order that will remain in effect for ten years, restricting his activities and contact with minors. He will also be registered on the Sex Offenders Register for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions aimed at safeguarding the community from potential harm.

Detective Constable Kate Molloy emphasized the seriousness of the case, stating, “Colin Mooney is clearly a depraved individual and the content of his online discussions is frankly sickening. He is a dangerous man and I am satisfied that the jail sentence and orders imposed will help protect the public for some considerable time to come. Lancashire Constabulary will continue to target those who seek to abuse children and to put them before the courts.”
