CHRISTOPHER WALSH AND SHOCKING ONLINE GROOMING IN CARDIFF
In a disturbing case that has sent shockwaves through the community of Cardiff, 41-year-old Christopher Walsh, originally from Barry, has been found guilty of engaging in highly manipulative and predatory conduct towards minors online.Walsh's malicious actions, which date back to early 2019, involved attempting to groom two teenage girls by exploiting social media platforms and deceptive decoys designed to catch predators.
The court heard that Walsh targeted two young girls, aged 13 and 14, through accounts he believed belonged to them.
In reality, these accounts were operated by adults working with the police to identify and apprehend online predators.
Walsh’s interactions with these decoys were described as extremely devious, and he demonstrated a longstanding, entrenched predatory sexual interest in children, according to the judge overseeing the case.
Prosecutor Eugene Egan detailed the timeline of Walsh’s offending, beginning with his contact with a social media account he thought belonged to a 14-year-old girl on March 20, 2019.
During the hearing at Newport Crown Court, Mr.
Egan revealed that the individual actually playing the role of the girl was an adult informant.
Walsh, in his communication, falsely claimed to be 40 years old and from Barry, South Wales.
He inquired about the girl’s relationship status and suggested the possibility of meeting in a hotel—an indication of his intent to pursue a sexual encounter.
The interactions quickly turned more disturbing as Walsh asked the decoy to send pictures of herself in swimming costumes and even in the bath.
He urged her to keep the conversation secret, labeling her as beautiful and expressing his desire to meet her face-to-face.
As the communication progressed, Walsh offered to help her with sex education and sought to persuade her to masturbate during their online exchanges.
The conversations ceased only after he made explicit requests on March 20.
The second set of offences involved yet another decoy—this time purporting to be a 13-year-old girl.
Between February 26 and March 30, 2019, Walsh repeatedly communicated with this account.
During their exchanges, Walsh falsely claimed to be a 40-year-old cage fighter, and he even extended an invitation for her to walk on the beach in Wales.
The court was informed that Walsh encouraged her to masturbate and to take a photograph of herself in the bath.
Furthermore, he suggested moving closer to her to facilitate future contact and made inappropriate comments about playing with her "flower," a clear indication of his sexual intentions.
Walsh’s arrest came in April 2019 after police traced his online activities.
During police interviews, he initially denied any wrongdoing, but the evidence against him was described as overwhelming by the prosecution.
The court proceedings revealed that Walsh has an extensive history of sexual offences involving minors.
His prior convictions date back to 1999, when he was sentenced to 18 months in a young offenders’ institution for indecent assault on a female under 16.
In 2002, he was sentenced to five years for two counts of indecent assault on a girl under 14.
His criminal record also includes a four-year sentence handed down in 2008 for engaging in sexual activity with a child under 16.
Additionally, Walsh has failed to comply with registration requirements, which has contributed to his ongoing criminal justice issues.
The defense, led by Andrew Taylor, acknowledged Walsh’s early guilty pleas and emphasized that his client’s sexual preferences have been longstanding.
However, the judge, Daniel Williams, did not find this sufficient to mitigate the severity of his crimes.
The judge stated that Walsh’s age, his extensive prior convictions, and his predatory behavior demonstrated a high risk of causing future harm.
Addressing Walsh directly, the judge condemned his manipulative tactics, describing him as "extremely devious" and stating that the image of him at his computer was "every parent's nightmare." Ultimately, Walsh was sentenced to two years and three months in prison.
He was also ordered to be subject to a sexual harm prevention order and to sign the sex offender register for a period of ten years, reflecting the seriousness with which the court views his actions and the ongoing risk he poses to the community.
