CHRISTOPHER BYRES FROM DUNDEE SENTENCED AFTER SEXUAL ASSAULT IN ANGUS
A disturbing case involving a Dundee-based electronic engineer has culminated in his placement on the Sex Offenders Register following a serious sexual assault incident involving a teenager. The incident took place in Angus, specifically at a property in Kingennie, where the offender, Christopher Byres, 50 years old, committed the assault while under the influence of alcohol.Last year, during a trial held at Forfar Sheriff Court, the court found Byres guilty of sexually assaulting an 18-year-old woman on February 5. The court heard that Byres attempted to coerce her into engaging in sexual activity without her consent. The evidence revealed that he had rubbed her body over her nightwear and repeatedly seized her hand, placing it on his naked penis, in a clear act of sexual misconduct.
Throughout the proceedings, solicitor Hannah Fairbrother emphasized that Byres acknowledged alcohol misuse as an aggravating factor rather than an excuse for his actions. She stated, “He appreciates that alcohol misuse is an aggravating factor, rather than an excuse. He appreciates that he consumed far too much. He’s advised me that since then, that sort of consumption of alcohol – he’s not done that again.”
Following the conviction, Sheriff Krista Johnston sentenced Byres, who resides on Alder Drive, to be registered as a sex offender for a period of 18 months. Additionally, she ordered him to complete 150 hours of unpaid community service. The sheriff remarked on the case, saying, “You’re assessed as a low risk. Notwithstanding, I remember the trial because I remember the evidence quite clearly and the very apparent upset you created.”
This case highlights the serious consequences of alcohol-fueled misconduct and underscores the importance of accountability for such offenses, especially when committed in familiar locations like Dundee and Angus.
