CAMERON RICHARDS SENTENCED TO 15 YEARS IN PRISON IN PLYMOUTH FOR CHILD SEXUAL OFFENCES
A man responsible for raping and sexually abusing children has been sentenced to 15 years in prison.Cameron Richards, who has no fixed address but is from Plymouth, appeared at Plymouth Crown Court after pleading guilty to eight sexual offences involving three minors.
The charges included two counts of rape, one count of attempted rape, one count of oral rape, and four counts of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activities.
For legal reasons, none of the children involved can be identified.
Prosecutor Rachel Drake told the court that 35-year-old Richards had admitted to abusing the children at various locations, including his workplace and during expeditions.
All victims were under ten years old at the start of these offences.
Ms.
Drake described how some victims, along with their families and supporters, were visibly distressed while hearing details of the charges during the hearing.
Victim Impact Statements were read out from the mother of one of the victims and from one of Richards' victims.
The mother explained that her child's assaults had caused severe emotional damage, with the child repeatedly stating they wanted to kill themselves.
One of the victims conveyed feeling as though they were to blame and feared no one would believe them.
They expressed concerns about losing their childhood and worries about future relationships.
Richards' defense, through advocate Michael Green, acknowledged that his mitigation was limited.
Green stated, "nothing my client could say through me would provide any comfort to the victims," and recognized that Richards had pleaded guilty to "horrendous offences." He added that Richards was aware he would face a long jail sentence and accepted that he deserved it.
During sentencing, Mr.
Recorder Richard Stead noted that Richards had no prior convictions but had been offending since 2007, continuing over many years.
Despite multiple opportunities to stop, Richards persisted, causing psychological and physical harm that would have lasting effects.
As the court proceedings continued, there was an outburst from several individuals in the public gallery, with angry and abusive shouts directed at Richards, including phrases like "I hope you f****** kill yourself" and "I hope you f****** die you dirty f****** b***ard." Some individuals approached Richards in the dock, prompting swift removal and calling for calm.
Several attendees were asked to leave, and proceedings resumed only after confirming there would be no further disruptions.
Mr.
Stead emphasized that Richards showed no regard for his victims, knowing his actions were wrong but continuing for his own sexual gratification.
He pointed out evidence of grooming behavior and the deliberate planning of abuse, with the victims having lost their childhoods and likely enduring deep psychological scars.
In sentencing, the judge considered the totality of Richards' offending and imposed a 15-year prison term.
This sentence was reduced by 25 percent due to Richards' early guilty plea, as per sentencing guidelines.
It was noted that Richards would serve at least ten years before being eligible for parole, and upon release, he would be subject to a conditional license and supervision.
Additionally, Richards was placed under a Sexual Harm Prevention Order indefinitely and will remain on the Sex Offenders' Register for life, requiring him to inform police of his whereabouts and any moves.

Constable Natasha Elliott-Smith from Plymouth’s Public Protection Unit expressed satisfaction with the sentence, stating, "I am pleased to hear that Cameron Richards has today been given a 15-year custodial sentence.
Mr.
Richards groomed his vulnerable victims and created opportunities to sexually abuse them; these offences started when the victims were all under the age of 10." She credited the courage of the victims for bringing the case to light, which led to this outcome.
The officer emphasized the importance of listening to children’s concerns and acting swiftly, thanking the victims and their families for their support and bravery.
She concluded by reaffirming the police’s commitment to supporting victims of sexual abuse, thoroughly investigating such crimes, and ensuring offenders are brought to justice.
