CONVICTED OFFENDERS BENJAMIN RUDGE AND OLENA LOBUNETS AND CAMBRIDGE

Benjamin Rudge, born September 1975, and Olena Lobunets, born December 1971, both residents of Richard Foster Road, Cambridge CB2 8DW, were convicted in 2019 for neglecting a herd of fallow deer by allowing them to starve in a field.

The animals, left at Clermont Hall in Little Cressingham, Thetford, were abandoned by Rudge and Lobunets during the winter of 2017-2018. The RSPCA found 14 fallow deer in a paddock that lacked food and shelter during the harsh conditions of the Beast from the East. During their investigation in February 2018, inspectors discovered one deer had already died and another had collapsed. The collapsed animal and three others died shortly afterward.

Rudge, a former company director, and Lobunets, a Ukrainian national renting the property, had been leasing Clermont Hall and three cottages as holiday accommodations costing up to £3,956 per week for groups of up to 36 people.

Jonathan Eales, prosecuting on behalf of the RSPCA, explained that a housekeeper was hired to care for both the property and the deer, but there was no money available for animal feed. The RSPCA visited after concerned walkers reported the poor condition of the deer. Inspectors found the animals emaciated, with their enclosure devoid of grass and overrun with molehills.

RSPCA staff began to feed the remaining deer, but despite their efforts, three more died. Post-mortem examinations revealed the deer were severely underweight and emaciated, with evidence that neglect had contributed to their deaths. Mr. Eales stated, 'These deer died as a result of neglect. They were malnourished, dehydrated, and incapable of surviving in an enclosure where there was insufficient food and no shelter.'

After the hearing, an RSPCA spokesman recalled the state of the deer upon arrival. He described them as 'very skinny — you could clearly see their ribs and hip bones.' The RSPCA initially aimed to remove the animals but was advised by expert vets that they were too weak to be moved. Accordingly, officers monitored them daily, providing feed and care.

Further tests uncovered issues with parasitic worms and poisonous ragwort in the field, prompting the need to relocate the herd before spring where ragwort could become more prominent. However, the owners failed to move the deer, leading vets to recommend that the animals be taken into the RSPCA's care.

The recovered herd now lives under the care of a private deer keeper. The court handed down a deprivation order, transferring ownership of the surviving deer to the RSPCA. Both Rudge and Lobunets received a two-year ban from deer keeping — the ban has since expired. No costs or additional penalties were imposed against the couple.
