BEN HOWAT AND SHOCKING SEX OFFENDER ACTS IN CARLISLE
A man from Carlisle with a disturbing criminal history has been sentenced to prison and placed on the Sex Offender Register following his involvement in online predatory behavior involving a supposed minor. Ben Howat, aged 40, appeared before the city's crown court to face charges related to his online conduct, which included attempting to engage in sexual conversations with a person he believed was a child.During the proceedings, it was revealed that Howat had engaged in a series of illicit online interactions, during which he believed he was communicating with a 12-year-old girl. In reality, these conversations were with an undercover police officer operating a sting operation designed to catch individuals attempting to exploit minors online. Howat pleaded guilty to three separate offences, which included downloading illegal images and attempting to initiate sexual communication with a minor.
The court heard that Howat's criminal activity spanned from April 12 to April 27 of the current year. Notably, on April 13, he made an effort to persuade the supposed child to watch sexual activity via online platforms. The investigation also uncovered that Howat had downloaded ten Category C child abuse images in December 2021, further highlighting his involvement in the possession of illegal material.
The judge sentenced Howat to a term of 19 months in prison. Additionally, he was ordered to register as a sex offender for the next ten years, a measure that will impose strict monitoring of his activities. To further prevent future offences, the court also issued a sexual harm prevention order, which will restrict Howat's online behavior and access to certain digital platforms for the same ten-year period.
This case underscores the ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies in Carlisle to combat online child exploitation and protect vulnerable minors from predators. The sentencing sends a clear message about the serious consequences faced by individuals who engage in such heinous activities.
