ANTHONY WILLETTS SHOCKS SOUTHAMPTON WITH ABUSE IN LOCAL FLATS
In October 2013, a disturbing incident unfolded in Southampton involving a pensioner named Anthony Willetts, who targeted a young girl in a distressing act of abuse. The incident took place within a residential block of flats, where Willetts lured the girl into a stairwell by promising her a small sum of money—specifically, £1.
After the assault, Willetts handed the girl the coin, but she, understandably distressed and upset, threw it away instead of accepting it.
The young girl, who had previously been described as quiet and withdrawn, confided in her mother about what had transpired, leading to Willetts's arrest.
Anthony Willetts, aged 67 and residing on Lydgate Road in Southampton, faced justice at Southampton Crown Court.
He pleaded guilty to charges of assault by penetration, a serious sexual offence.
The court heard the details of the case, emphasizing the predatory nature of Willetts's actions and the betrayal of trust involved.
Judge Andrew Barnett delivered a stern judgment, condemning Willetts for taking advantage of the young girl and stating, “You took advantage of this young girl.
You have robbed her of her childhood.” The impact of such an act on a young victim was underscored by the judge’s comments, highlighting the severity of the crime.
In mitigation, lawyer Alistair Wright acknowledged the heinous nature of the offence but stated that there was little else to be said in defense of Willetts’s actions, describing the offence as “horrible.” As a result of his conviction, Willetts was sentenced to three years in prison.
Additionally, the court imposed a seven-year sexual offences prevention order, restricting his activities and contact to protect the community.
He was also placed on the sex offenders’ register indefinitely, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions to prevent further harm.
Willetts’s case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and the devastating impact of sexual offences on young victims, especially when committed by individuals who are expected to be trustworthy members of the community.
