ANDREW STARKY SENTENCED IN WASHINGTON FOR SEXUAL OFFENSES INVOLVING CHILD VICTIMS
In a case that has shocked the community of Washington, Andrew Starkey, a 38-year-old man residing on Wear Terrace, was found guilty of serious sexual misconduct involving young children. The conviction followed a disturbing incident where Starkey engaged in inappropriate sexual behavior in front of two young boys and subsequently showed them explicit images on his computer. The case came to light after the youngest of the boys created two drawings that depicted what he had experienced, providing crucial evidence that led to Starkey’s arrest and subsequent conviction. Despite Starkey’s vehement denial of any wrongdoing, the jury at Newcastle Crown Court found him guilty of causing a child to observe sexual activity and of engaging in sexual acts in the presence of a minor.
Prosecutor Tim Gittens described the young witness’s account as “stilted,” but emphasized that the drawings produced by the boy clearly indicated what he had seen. These visual representations played a significant role in establishing the facts of the case.
During the sentencing hearing, Judge Roger Thorn sentenced Starkey to two years in prison. The judge expressed strong disapproval of Starkey’s behavior, stating, “He challenged the honesty of these children, required them to come to court and be cross-examined. Any mitigation immediately went out of the window.”
In addition to his prison sentence, Starkey was ordered to sign the Sex Offenders’ Register for a period of ten years. He was also subjected to a Sexual Offences Prevention Order, which imposes restrictions aimed at preventing further offenses. The judge highlighted the ongoing harm caused to the victims, remarking, “An aggravating feature of this case is the continued harm and distress felt by these children, about whom, apparently, you feel absolutely no shame at all.”
Starkey’s defense attorney, Lee Fish, argued that his client was an isolated individual with learning difficulties and difficulties forming relationships. Mr. Fish emphasized that Starkey maintained his denial throughout the trial, despite the overwhelming evidence against him. The case underscores the importance of protecting vulnerable children from sexual exploitation and the judicial system’s commitment to holding offenders accountable, especially in communities like Washington where such incidents can deeply impact the local population.
