Craig Wilson

Newcastle Washington Sexual Abuser

September 2006 Telephone records unmasked pervert A 14-year-old girl became pregnant by a sex offender who was working as a builder at her school while on probation. Craig Wilson had convictions for assault occasioning grevious bodily harm, assault, and molesting an 18-year-old girl in a pub in 2001. The 26-year-old was on probation as part of a community sentence imposed last year for violence and harassing a former partner. But he did not tell his supervising officer he was working for a building company carrying out repairs at a comprehensive school in Washington, Wearside. While working there, he met his victim. Wilson told her he was 20 and obtained her telephone number. After the couple exchanged hundreds of texts and calls, Wilson collected her from school and took her to his flat, where they had sex. The girl became pregnant and had an abortion, Newcastle Crown Court was told. Wilson, of Murton Court, Newcastle, was jailed for two-and-a- half years after admitting sexual activity with a child in March this year and meeting a child after sexual grooming. He had not been on the sex offenders’ register after his earlier indecent assault conviction, but must now sign the register for life. He is also banned from working with children for life. Judge David Wood said he gave credit for Wilson’s early guilty plea and said references given on his behalf showed a positive side to his character. Jailing him, he said: “You were employed by a firm of builders who had a contract at the school and you were at the time being supervised by the probation service. “You did not tell the probation services about your employment at the school. “When you were at that school you met the girl. It is plain you met her several times before the sexual activity took place and I am satisfied that you very much had in mind some form of sexual activity with that girl.” Judge Wood said one report said there was a medium risk of Wilson committing further offences. Another said there was a high risk of him causing harm. “There is, in my judgement, clearly a pattern of offending here,” Judge Wood said. “The offences are so serious only custody can be justified for them. “The grooming is an aggravating feature.” Wilson was caught when the girl’s father became anxious and checked his daughter’s telephone records. He saw the large number of calls and messages and contacted police. Wilson was initially charged with rape, which he denied. The prosecution accepted his pleas to the lesser offences.
