January 2010 Ex-navy man locked up for child sex abuse A paedophile who ‘wormed his way’ into families to abuse young boys is today behind bars. Former Royal Navy sailor Alan Stewart was jailed for eight years for abusing three boys over a 26-year period Stewart, who served in the Falklands War, had previously been described by one of his victims as a ‘pillar of the community’. The 63-year-old volunteered as a driver for elderly people and worked for Reliance Security in Portsmouth when he lived in Denmead. But all the time he was a paedophile who subjected young boys to sexual abuse. Stewart abused two boys aged under 10 at his home in Field Way, Denmead, between 1979 and 1984. He later moved to Milton Keynes in Buckinghamshire where he subjected another boy, aged under 13, to sexual abuse between 2004 and 2005. Stewart was arrested when one of his victims, now in his 30s, reported his abuse at Cosham Police Station. The man confided in his fiancee about what happened to him as a child in 1998. But it took another 10 years before he felt able to contact police. Stewart, of Coffee Hall Lane, Milton Keynes, pleaded not guilty to three offences of sexual assault on a child aged under 13, two counts of indecent assault on a child and one other sexual offence. But following a six-day trial at Portsmouth Crown Court he was found guilty of all six charges. In sentencing, Judge Ian Pearson said: ‘What you did was worm your way into families and then you abused. Having targeted young boys you abused them over a period of some years.’He added: ‘It was a gross abuse of trust.’ Detective Constable Elaine Cawkill said: ‘This result is an example that no matter how old the crime, the law will always eventually catch up with offenders and justice will be served. ‘Hampshire Constabulary will continue to investigate criminal cases such as this one with the same diligence and professionalism, which will lead to more convictions for those who perpetrate these kind of horrific sexual offences, no matter where or when they occur.’ Stewart must sign the Sex Offenders Register, is subject to a Sex Offences Prevention Order and disqualified from working with children.
