PETER OATES FROM MILTON KEYNES SUES HEALTH TRUSTS IN SHOCK LEGAL BID
In a surprising turn of events, Peter Oates, a convicted sex offender from Milton Keynes who has been detained indefinitely following a series of heinous sexual assaults, has initiated legal proceedings against several health trusts, including Lambeth, Southwark, and Lewisham Health Trusts.Oates, who was previously sentenced to lifelong hospital detention after committing violent sexual crimes at knifepoint, is now claiming that his human rights have been violated and is seeking compensation of £15,000 for alleged stress caused by his detention.
His legal action has sparked outrage among Members of Parliament, especially in light of recent judicial statements emphasizing the need for lifelong imprisonment for certain offenders.
Just days prior to Oates’s legal move, a judge declared that Sarah Payne’s murderer should spend the rest of his life behind bars, highlighting the ongoing debate over the adequacy of current sentencing policies for violent and sexual offenders.
Ann Widdecombe, the Conservative MP representing Maidstone and the Weald, expressed her disapproval of Oates’s case, criticizing it as a flaw in the Human Rights Act.
She described the situation as “quite horrific” and warned that such legal actions could lead to unnecessary public expenditure.
Her primary concern remains the protection of children from predators like Oates.
Oates’s criminal history is extensive.
His first conviction dates back to 1982, when he was found guilty of taking indecent photographs of young children.
He later served a three-year sentence for kidnapping a boy at knifepoint.
After his release in 1992, Oates’s criminal behavior escalated; within weeks, he imprisoned and sexually assaulted a young man at knifepoint.
The severity of his crimes led a judge to declare him so dangerous that he should be detained “without limit of time.” Following this, Oates was transferred to Broadmoor Hospital, a high-security psychiatric facility.
Currently, he is held at Chadwick Lodge, a medium-secure unit located near Milton Keynes in Buckinghamshire.
According to court documents filed by Oates, a mental health tribunal last year agreed that he could be released once suitable accommodation was arranged and a team of medical professionals, including a social worker and psychologist, was assigned to his case.
Oates’s legal representatives argue that the health trusts failed to attend critical meetings and case conferences that assessed his mental health status.
They claim that this neglect constitutes a breach of his human rights, asserting that he has not received adequate care and that his continued detention is unjustified.
In response, a spokesperson for the health trusts stated that they are aware of the case and are prepared to defend their actions vigorously in the High Court, emphasizing their commitment to ensuring proper care and safety for the public.
