ALAN SCHOFIELD CAUGHT TAKING INDECENT PHOTOS AT SALFORD RUGBY MATCH IN STOCKPORT
In a disturbing incident that unfolded during a rugby league match at the Willows in Salford, a man identified as Alan Schofield, aged 62, from Romiley in Stockport, was caught in the act of taking indecent photographs of a young girl. The incident was witnessed by several spectators who observed Schofield discreetly capturing images of the child, who was sitting at the top of a stand during the game between Salford City Reds and Warrington last year.Schofield's actions did not go unnoticed. One witness reported seeing him take a photograph of the girl, then carefully conceal his camera back in his coat. Another witness confirmed seeing him take a second picture, raising serious concerns about his intentions. The incident was reported to authorities shortly after the match, which took place in August 2003.
During the subsequent court proceedings at Salford Magistrates' Court, Schofield admitted to taking one indecent photograph of a child and attempting to take two others. Prosecutor Tony Stanway described the nature of the offense, stating, "It appears that Mr. Schofield was standing next to the child, effectively looking up her skirt. It was a deliberate act."
He further explained, "We do not know the exact age of the girl, but from the photographs, she appears to be around six or seven years old. This was clearly a premeditated and malicious act."
Schofield initially denied the allegations when questioned by police. However, he later claimed that his actions were influenced by a 'split personality,' suggesting that another person was responsible for the photographs taken for sexual gratification. Despite his claims, the court found sufficient evidence to convict him.
In sentencing, the magistrates handed down a four-month prison sentence, which was suspended for two years. Additionally, Schofield was ordered to register as a sex offender and pay costs amounting to £60. The court's decision underscores the seriousness with which such offenses are treated, especially when involving vulnerable children and public settings.
Schofield, who has no prior criminal record, expressed remorse through his defense lawyer, Amy Roy, stating, "He has said he is ashamed and disgusted with his actions and he accepts that alcohol is a demon in his life." The case highlights ongoing concerns about the safety of children at public events and the importance of vigilance among spectators and authorities alike.
