ALAN KNIGHT FROM GLOUCESTER CAUGHT GROOMING TEENAGE GIRL IN BRISTOL AND RHONDDA CYNON TAF
In April 2019, a disturbing case unfolded involving Alan Knight, a man from Gloucester, who engaged in the grooming and sexual exploitation of a teenage girl he met through social media. The victim, who was only 15 years old at the time, was lured into a manipulative relationship that spanned several months, during which Knight used various tactics to build her trust and manipulate her emotionally.
Knight, aged 46 at the time, initially befriended the girl on Snapchat, a popular social media platform.
Over time, he began taking her on Sunday afternoon drives, during which he would visit scenic or isolated locations, creating an illusion of intimacy and companionship.
The girl, feeling isolated and with low self-esteem, confided in Knight, believing he was the only person who truly listened to her.
She was unaware that Knight was pretending to be a different person, claiming his name was Alan Smith and falsely claiming to be 30 years old, although he was actually 46.
Prosecutor Heath Edwards told Cardiff Crown Court that Knight’s intentions were clearly manipulative, aiming to foster a romantic relationship with the vulnerable girl.
He gradually gained her confidence, buying her gifts such as a teddy bear, a ring, a bracelet, and chocolates, which further deepened her infatuation with him.
The girl described feeling like she was “the only girl in the world” when she was with him, highlighting her emotional vulnerability and the impact of Knight’s grooming tactics.
The court heard that the girl and Knight communicated via FaceTime when she believed her parents would not discover their conversations.
During these private calls, Knight continued to build a sense of closeness and trust.
Around Christmas 2017, Knight suggested they should meet in person, and their first face-to-face encounter took place in the New Year.
Over the following two months, Knight made regular trips from Gloucester to Rhondda Cynon Taff on Sundays to see her and take her out in his car, further cementing their clandestine relationship.
It was established that Knight was aware of her age during these trips, which he conducted from Gloucester to Rhondda Cynon Taff.
During one of these drives, he parked in an isolated area and engaged in sexual activity with her.
Although she consented, she was below the age of consent, making the act illegal.
The girl also reported that Knight would ask her to call him “daddy,” a term she described as part of his “massive daddy kink,” which he denied.
Further allegations revealed that Knight took the girl to a Travelodge at Cribbs Causway in Bristol on February 2 of the previous year.
She told her family she was visiting a friend, but in reality, she was with Knight.
During this stay, he bought her alcohol, and they engaged in sexual activity, including the use of a sex toy.
Around Valentine’s Day, Knight took her back to the same Travelodge for another sexual encounter.
The girl’s school friends grew increasingly concerned about her relationship with Knight, especially given the significant age difference and the secretive nature of their meetings.
Their concerns prompted a teacher to report the matter to the police, leading to an investigation.
Knight was subsequently arrested and charged with multiple offences.
During the court proceedings, the prosecution highlighted the aggravating factors of the case, including the substantial age gap, the premeditated grooming behavior, and the manipulative tactics employed by Knight.
The victim, now 17, provided a heartfelt victim impact statement, revealing that she believed she was in love with Knight.
She described how the experience has affected her mental health, making it difficult to concentrate at school and causing her to experience flashbacks and anxiety, which have hindered her ability to leave the house.
It was also revealed that Knight had a previous caution for battery in 2008, but he had no other relevant convictions.
Ultimately, Knight pleaded guilty to five counts of sexual activity with a child.
Judge Michael Fitton QC sentenced him to four years in prison, emphasizing the seriousness of his actions.
Additionally, he imposed a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order and ordered Knight to register as a sex offender, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his conduct after his release from custody.
