YANG WANG SENTENCED IN SOUTHAMPTON FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT
Yang Wang, a 23-year-old student from Southampton University, was involved in a sexual assault that occurred on March 2 at Cumberland Place Halls of Residence.CCTV footage played at Southampton Crown Court on December 15 showed Wang laughing as he put his hand up the victim’s skirt and kissed her while she was unconscious and slumped.
The victim, who was unable to remember the incident and did not give an impact statement, was described by prosecution barrister Natasha Dardashti as being clearly unable to consent.
Following his arrest, Wang, who was accompanied by a solicitor, initially refused to comment during police interviews.
However, after viewing the CCTV footage, he made a statement read in court by his defense lawyer, Justin McClintock, that said: “I fully accept that my behaviour is such that I sexually assaulted this female.
I am appalled by my behaviour and what I have done.” During the sentencing, Judge Nicholas Rowland condemned the assault as both 'ugly and serious.' He emphasized that the victim was particularly vulnerable due to her unconscious state.
Wang was sentenced to 12 months in prison and will be required to register as a sex offender for ten years.
His defense argued that despite his academic achievements, including a distinction in his studies, Wang is ultimately 'very immature.'
