WILLIAM PYBURN SENTENCED IN SOUTHAMPTON FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF CHILDREN
In a case that has shocked the community of Southampton, William Pyburn, a 74-year-old resident of Hampshire, has been sentenced to three years in prison after being found guilty of multiple serious charges involving the sexual abuse of a minor.The conviction was handed down following a detailed trial at Southampton Crown Court, where jurors deliberated on eleven specific counts that included indecent assault, engaging in sexual activity with a child, and coercing a child into participating in sexual acts.
Judge Christopher Leigh QC presided over the sentencing hearing and took into account several mitigating factors before delivering his judgment.
He acknowledged Pyburn’s advanced age, his previously unblemished character, and his ongoing health issues, which the court considered relevant in the context of the sentence.
The judge also noted that Pyburn had attempted to justify his actions by claiming that what he did was a form of “therapy,” a statement he made after undergoing a prostate operation.
During the trial, it was revealed that Pyburn had engaged in manipulative and coercive behavior to prevent his young victim from disclosing the abuse.
He allegedly told her that her family would hate her if she told anyone, and warned that he would die if she did.
Furthermore, he reportedly threatened that as she grew older, he would falsely claim that her boyfriend had had sex with her, which could lead to her boyfriend being imprisoned.
These manipulative tactics were part of the evidence that led to his conviction.
In his defense, Pyburn denied all allegations, maintaining his innocence throughout the proceedings.
However, the jury found the evidence sufficient to convict him on all counts.
The court’s decision reflects the severity of the crimes committed and the need to protect vulnerable children from such predatory behavior.
