SALE PENSIONER WILLIAM DOWRY SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF YOUNG GIRL

In October 2010, William Dowry, a 71-year-old pensioner from Aston Lane, Sale, was sentenced to prison for repeatedly abusing a young girl at his Greater Manchester home. The offences, which occurred between 2001 and 2004 at his former address in Sale, began when the victim was just six years old.

Police stated that Dowry lured the girl to his house by claiming he had toys in his attic for her to play with. During the abuse, which took place on multiple occasions, he sexually assaulted her.

Dowry later pleaded guilty to 12 counts of sexual assault and was subsequently sentenced to five years and four months in prison at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court. Additionally, he was ordered to sign the sex offenders’ register for life, was banned from working with children forever, and was subjected to an indefinite sexual offences prevention order.

The girl confided in a child protection officer at her school, prompting police investigation. Det Con Nicola Graham of the Greater Manchester Police child protection unit said: “Dowry had a variety of toys in his attic and he used these to lure a completely innocent young girl into his house. Once alone with her he abused her on a number of occasions over three years. He is a vile man and while nothing can erase the emotional scars the victim has suffered I hope the fact he has been jailed can be of some small comfort.”
