WAYNE FOWDY FROM SUNDERLAND JAILED FOR SEXUAL OFFENSES INVOLVING 15-YEAR-OLD GIRL ON FACEBOOK

In a case that has once again highlighted the dangers of social media and the risks posed by convicted offenders, Wayne Fowdy, a resident of Sunderland, has been sentenced to prison for engaging in sexual activity with a minor he met through Facebook. The incident has brought to light serious breaches of legal restrictions placed upon him due to his previous convictions.

Wayne Fowdy, who was previously convicted in 2006 for assaulting a 13-year-old girl, had been ordered to register as a sex offender for a period of ten years. Despite these legal obligations, Fowdy’s recent actions demonstrated a blatant disregard for the restrictions designed to protect minors and prevent further offenses. In October, Fowdy established a connection with a 15-year-old girl on Facebook, a social networking platform that has become a common venue for social interaction among teenagers and adults alike.

Within a matter of days after they became friends online, Fowdy arranged to meet the girl in person. The meeting resulted in them engaging in sexual activity, an act that is illegal given his status as a registered sex offender and the restrictions that accompany that status. Under the terms of his registration, Fowdy was prohibited from having any unsupervised contact with minors, a rule he clearly violated in this case.

The incident was brought before Newcastle Crown Court, where Judge James Goss presided over the case. During the proceedings, Fowdy, now 31 years old and residing in Farringdon, Sunderland, pleaded guilty to charges of engaging in sexual activity with a child. The court was presented with extensive evidence, including a transcript of the online messages exchanged between Fowdy and the girl, which spanned over 100 pages. These messages revealed the nature of their communication and the progression towards meeting in person.

Judge Goss addressed Fowdy directly, stating, “Although I have seen from the exchange of messages over Facebook she was keen to commence a relationship with you, you knew she was 15 and were breaching the requirements of your sex offender registration. Clearly, this previous offence and the breach of registration requirements significantly aggravate the circumstances.”

It was also noted during the trial that the girl initially told Fowdy she was 16 years old, but she later disclosed her true age before they met. This deception did not prevent Fowdy from proceeding with the encounter, which resulted in his imprisonment.

As part of his sentence, Fowdy was ordered to sign the sex offenders’ register for an additional ten years. Furthermore, he was subjected to an indefinite sexual offences prevention order, which imposes restrictions on his internet usage and contact with minors. These measures are intended to prevent any future offenses and to monitor his activities more closely.

Andrew Finlay, representing Fowdy, argued that his client was not a dangerous offender and had taken steps to turn his life around. He explained that Fowdy had been socially isolated due to his previous conviction and had relied heavily on Facebook as a means of social interaction. Finlay emphasized that the contact with the girl was an isolated incident that occurred under circumstances that were not typical of Fowdy’s usual behavior.

Despite these arguments, the court’s decision reflected the seriousness of the breach and the importance of safeguarding minors from potential harm. Fowdy’s actions serve as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges faced in regulating online interactions and ensuring the safety of vulnerable individuals in the digital age.
