THOMAS DUNLOP FROM HENDON AND SUNDERLAND SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENSES

In a case that has spanned over a decade, Thomas Dunlop, a pensioner from Hendon and Sunderland, has been convicted and sentenced for serious sexual offenses committed against a young girl during the 1980s. The story began to unfold in February 2012, when Dunlop was finally brought to justice after years of silence and a determined campaign by his victim.

It all started in 2001 when a woman came forward to report that Dunlop had sexually assaulted her in the 1980s. At that time, authorities in Newcastle Crown Court questioned Dunlop about the allegations. Despite the woman’s claims, Dunlop denied any wrongdoing, and no charges were filed against him at that point. The case appeared to have gone cold, leaving the victim feeling unheard and unresolved.

However, nearly ten years later, the victim decided to take matters into her own hands. Living near Dunlop’s residence in Hendon, Sunderland, she began a public campaign to seek justice. She covered the streets surrounding his home with posters explicitly detailing the abuse she had suffered. Her act of defiance was driven by a desire to ensure her voice was heard and that her suffering was acknowledged.

This bold move prompted a renewed investigation into Dunlop’s past. As a result, authorities re-arrested him, and during questioning, Dunlop chose to confront his actions. He admitted to charges of indecent assault and indecency with a child, acknowledging his guilt after years of denial. The court heard that the offenses dated back to the mid-1980s, but it was only through the victim’s persistent efforts that justice was finally served.

During the sentencing hearing, Judge Les Spittle condemned Dunlop’s conduct, describing it as a “course of conduct of appalling sexual assaults.” The judge emphasized the public’s inability to comprehend such behavior and highlighted the suffering endured by the victim, who was compelled to take drastic steps to expose her abuser. Judge Spittle sentenced Dunlop to three years in prison, and he was ordered to register as a sex offender for life.

In his defense, Dunlop, now 78 and residing on Nelson Close in Hendon, expressed remorse. He told officials, “It is all my fault. This should never have happened. There is nothing to say. I’m ashamed of myself.” The court’s decision aimed not only to punish Dunlop but also to acknowledge the courage of the victim, whose perseverance ultimately led to justice. The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of speaking out and the long road many victims face in seeking accountability.
