TIMOTHY VITALE FROM GLOUCESTER SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT ON YOUNG GIRL

In a case that has shocked the community of Gloucester, Timothy Vitale, a 46-year-old resident of Southgate Street, was sentenced to six and a half years in prison for sexually assaulting a young girl. The incident, which took place in 2013, involved Vitale committing the assault on four separate occasions. Despite the jury's conviction following a trial held in November, Vitale has continued to deny any wrongdoing, refusing to admit guilt even as he faces sentencing.

During the sentencing hearing at Gloucester Crown Court, Judge Jamie Tabor QC addressed Vitale directly, highlighting his continued denial of the crimes. The judge remarked, “You are unable at this stage to admit that you did anything wrong,” emphasizing the importance of acknowledging such serious offenses. He further explained that admitting guilt would require Vitale to accept that he had committed acts that are wholly unacceptable, not just once but on multiple occasions. The judge expressed skepticism about whether Vitale would acknowledge his guilt in the near future, suggesting it might take some time before he does so.

In his sentencing remarks, Judge Tabor took into account Vitale’s previously clean criminal record, noting that he had no prior involvement with the law. The judge also praised the young girl involved in the case, describing her as an “outstanding witness” who provided compelling testimony during the trial.

During the proceedings, Anna Midgely, representing Vitale, argued against the imposition of a sexual offences prevention order. She contended that Vitale did not pose a threat to children in general, as his offending was limited to a single girl and occurred only on a few occasions when he was under the influence of alcohol. Midgely emphasized that the court should consider Vitale’s mental health issues, including depression and anxiety disorder, which she claimed would make the prison sentence more impactful on him than on someone without such difficulties. She also highlighted that Vitale was of a mature age and had maintained a clean criminal record, working as a responsible member of the community.

Despite her arguments, Judge Tabor ordered Vitale to register as a sex offender for life, a standard requirement in cases of this nature. The judge’s decision underscores the seriousness with which the court views such offenses and the importance of public safety. Vitale’s six-and-a-half-year sentence will serve as a stark reminder of the consequences of such criminal behavior, and he will be subject to strict monitoring through the sex offender register for the foreseeable future.
