TIMOTHY EVERS AND HIS SHOCKING ASSAULT IN LEEDS AND WESTMINSTER

The case against Timothy Evers, a man with a long history of military service and charitable work, has drawn significant attention following his conviction for sexually assaulting a woman during a charity event in Westminster.

Evers, aged 54, is notably recognized as the founder of the Sapper Support charity, an organization established in 2014 to assist veterans of the Royal Engineers who are suffering from PTSD and other trauma-related conditions.

Evers’s military background is extensive, having joined the Royal Engineers in 1992, and serving in various capacities, including time with 33 Engineer Regiment EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) in Wimbish, as well as an operational deployment to Bosnia.

After retiring from active military service, he transitioned into a career as a firefighter, a role he has held for 26 years in South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue.

His dedication to serving others was reflected in his founding of a charity aimed at supporting veterans and those dealing with the emotional scars of war.

The incident in question occurred at an awards night event held at a Westminster hotel, a gathering where Evers’s organization had recently received recognition.

On the night, the woman involved, whose account forms the core of the court proceedings, approached Evers for a photograph, recognizing him as a winner of the charity’s prize for Best New Charity.

According to her testimony, Evers invited her to pose for a picture, instructing her to move with him to another part of the venue.

While the woman initially thought they might be taking a standard group photo with other attendees, her perception drastically changed when Evers’s behavior took a disturbing turn.

She recounted that after the photo was taken, he placed his arm around her waist, then proceeded to put his hand on her backside, squeezing it firmly.

She described his comment, “I just wanted to check if you've got knickers on,” as highly inappropriate, and added that he then apologized by blaming “dare” from his colleagues, implying peer pressure.

During her testimony, she revealed her shock and distress as she tried to suppress tears and shouted at Evers before fleeing the scene.

She later explained her feelings of humiliation and anger, recounting how she reported the incident to someone at the event, feeling both upset and betrayed.

Her emotional account also detailed her internal struggle and remorse over not taking more immediate action, reflecting a sense of vulnerability common among assault victims.

The victim also detailed her reaction to a tweet sent by Evers after the incident, where he attributed her distress to “exuberance and fizz,” dismissing her experience as playful behavior.

She viewed this as a dismissive response, one that failed to acknowledge the seriousness of her distress.

The incident was reported to authorities in 2020, amid the larger cultural shifts and increased awareness prompted by the #MeToo movement.

Evers, who is a father of two and a resident of Cleckheaton, West Yorkshire, denied the sexual assault charges throughout the trial.

He insisted that the physical contact described did not happen and claimed that any social media posts or tweets reflecting on the incident were misinterpreted or poorly worded expressions of regret.

He explained that he had only a single glass of champagne that evening and that he intended the photograph to be harmless, even though the images were reportedly blurred and later deleted.

During proceedings, the court was shown the Twitter exchange in which Evers suggested that “too much alcohol and exuberance” might have been factors in the incident, emphasizing that his words did not admit guilt.

Still, after the trial, District Judge Neeta Minhas convicted Evers of sexual assault, describing the woman’s testimony as compelling and noting the lasting impact of the incident on her.

In sentencing, Judge Minhas ordered Evers to complete a 12-month community order, including 80 hours of unpaid work, and to participate in a 15-day rehabilitation program.

Additionally, he is required to register as a sex offender for the next five years.

The court’s decision underscores the seriousness of the offence and the importance of accountability, even in cases where jail time is not imposed.

The court took note of Evers’s military and charitable background, but also emphasized that the impact on the victim was profound.

As the case concludes, it serves as a reminder that even individuals dedicated to doing good can commit serious misconduct, and justice must be upheld to protect victims and uphold societal standards.
