MAN HAS BEEN JAILED AFTER BEING FOUND GUILTY OF RAPING A MAN
Abdi Wahab Abdulla, aged 31 and residing on Harehills Avenue in Leeds, was found guilty at Leeds Crown Court after a four-day trial of both rape and attempted rape.He had previously admitted guilt to a theft charge involving the same victim.
Today, he received a sentence of seven and a half years in prison and will be registered as a sex offender.
The crimes took place on the morning of January 14, 2023.
The victim, who was 19 at the time, had been out partying and fell asleep inside Leeds city centre’s Queens Arcade.
CCTV footage captured Abdulla entering the arcade and approaching the sleeping victim, during which he searched the victim and pocketed some of his possessions.
The victim woke up during the incident, at which point Abdulla was seen assisting him to stand and walking out together.
Following that, Abdulla followed the victim for some distance, initially threatening him with a knife and committing oral rape near the Merrion Centre, then attempting anal rape in Woodhouse Moor Park.
It was after the oral assault that the victim discovered his phone, keys, and credit card were missing.
The victim reported these crimes to the police later that day.
Abdulla was identified as a suspect after officers recognized him from CCTV images, leading to his arrest on February 12, 2023.
A forensic DNA match subsequently linked him to the crimes.
