THOMAS SHELTON OF LEEDS SENTENCED TO 20 YEARS FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES

In a harrowing case that has shocked the community of Leeds, Thomas Shelton, a 63-year-old former Army officer and hospital worker, has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term of 20 years after being found guilty of a series of heinous sexual offenses against young girls.

The conviction was handed down by a jury at Leeds Crown Court following a detailed trial that uncovered a disturbing pattern of abuse spanning several decades.

Shelton, who previously worked as a porter at St James's Hospital in Leeds from 1987 until 2005, was convicted of ten counts of rape, three counts of indecent assault, one count of gross indecency, and four counts of child cruelty.

The charges against him date back to the 1960s through the early 1980s, revealing a long history of criminal behavior.

The court heard that some of the victims were as young as 10 years old at the time of the abuse.

During the proceedings, the court also learned about Shelton’s earlier criminal history.

Over 40 years ago, he was imprisoned for his involvement in a notorious incident during his military service.

In 1965, Shelton, then aged 20, was court-martialed and sentenced to three years in prison after being convicted of attempted murder in Sarawak, Malaysia.

He was part of a group of four British soldiers from the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders who formed what was described as a “committee of execution.” This group was responsible for a brutal act aimed at a village leader suspected of aiding Indonesians during the Indonesian-Malaysian confrontation that took place between 1962 and 1966.

The soldiers drew lots to decide who would throw a grenade into the victim’s bungalow.

Although the grenade was thrown, it failed to explode, and the intended victim managed to throw it back through the window, narrowly escaping death.

This violent episode highlights the disturbing history associated with Shelton’s military past.

Judge Peter Hunt, presiding over the case, expressed his condemnation of Shelton’s actions, stating, “These convictions disclose a degree of wickedness that really is almost impossible to contemplate.

It has taken a very long time, but eventually, as it always will, the law has caught up with you.

The complainants have been struggling against all the odds to come to terms with the emotional and psychological damage you have inflicted upon them.” As part of his sentence, Shelton was also subjected to a Sexual Offences Prevention Order, which prohibits him from working with children or having unsupervised access to minors in the future.

Throughout the sentencing, Shelton showed no visible emotion and simply nodded in acknowledgment when Judge Hunt addressed him, even as he was led away to begin his prison term.

In a statement read aloud in court, one of the victims described Shelton as “a nasty and evil man,” emphasizing the fear and trauma he caused.

The case has left a lasting impact on the community and highlights the importance of justice for victims of such heinous crimes.
