TERRY NEWMAN SENTENCED TO 12 YEARS FOR RAPE AND COERCIVE CONTROL IN SALISBURY

A resident of Salisbury has been convicted on multiple charges of rape as well as controlling and coercive behavior. Terry Newman, aged 52 and residing on Cherry Orchard Lane in Salisbury, was handed down a sentence of twelve years in prison on the 5th of April.

The criminal case against Newman came to light after an incident in 2020, originally involving an unrelated matter that prompted police to respond to a call. During the course of this police report, the victim came forward to disclose a series of troubling and serious allegations, revealing that Newman had subjected her to sexual assaults over a period of time, along with controlling and coercively manipulating her life.

According to the victim, Newman had forced her into a sexual act during one of these assaults, during which he pressed her head down into a pillow, severely intimidating and harming her. The woman described previous instances where Newman inflicted physical violence upon her, and detailed how he exerted control over her day-to-day movements, dictating where she could go, as well as controlling her financial affairs.

Detective Constable Ryan Churchley, who led the investigation, expressed appreciation for the bravery demonstrated by the victim. In his statement, he said: “Firstly, I would like to thank the victim for the bravery she has shown in contacting police in relation to her ordeal. Not only that, but I’d like to commend her for the bravery she showed in the courtroom during the trial. After Newman pleaded not guilty, his victim was forced to relive her ordeal through cross-examination in court. I hope this sentence will bring her some form of closure, although I fully understand that no prison term can undo the pain inflicted upon her.”

He further added, “Newman often consumed alcohol before becoming violent and manipulative. No one should ever endure what this woman has gone through.”

The detective also issued a plea to others who might be suffering in silence, encouraging victims to come forward. He assured that police officers will provide support throughout the legal process and can direct victims to specialized agencies capable of offering ongoing assistance. This case highlights the importance of reporting such behavior and the commitment of law enforcement to bringing perpetrators like Newman to justice.
