Terance Kaye

Scarborough Sexual Abuser

July 2008 Sex pervert jailed after targeting girl, 8 A 60-YEAR-OLD Scarborough man was today starting a four-year prison sentence after admitting intending to sexually groom a child under the age of 13. York Crown Court heard Terance Kaye, of Castle Road, offered young girls money in a bid to lure them back to his home. Kaye, who in 1995 was convicted at Bradford Crown Court of child abduction and gross indecency, targeted an eight-year-old girl in Scarborough earlier this year. Prosecuting, Alan Mitcheson said Kaye offered the girl 50p to go to his home, where he planned to expose himself to her and commit a sex act in front of her. Mr Mitcheson said: “The police investigation into this matter was triggered because of an apparently innocent remark made by the intended victim to her mother. She said she was out playing with friends when a man had given her 50p and asked her to go round to his house later.” Police found out from speaking to the victim’s friends that it was not the first time Kaye had offered children money to visit him. Mr Mitcheson added: “Fortunately it appears no inappropriate conduct occurred during the course of these visits.” During police interview Kaye admitted the offences and agreed his behaviour amounted to grooming. He said he had been taking medication for depression, which reduced his libido, but was no longer taking it at the time of the incident. The court heard Kaye served a five-year jail term for child abduction in the 1990s after persuading a three-year-old girl to follow him into a house where he intended to get her to engage in sexual activity, but he was disturbed by a member of the public before it could take place. Taryn Turner, mitigating, said: “There wasn’t a more serious intention in the mind of the defendant, such as rape or something worse. What was in his mind was unpleasant, but not the most serious offence.” Passing sentence, Judge Scott Wolstenholme said it wasn’t Kaye’s fault that he was sexually attracted to children, but added: “What is your fault is when you act on this sexual interest. “My priority has to be protection of the public, particularly young girls. I have to consider whether this history means you are a danger. I don’t think serious physical harm is something you intended, but I do think there is a significant risk that, if you commit offences such as this, one of your victims or more will suffer serious psychological harm.” Kaye was given an extended sentence of 10 years, meaning if he breaks the terms of his licence after release from jail he would likely have to serve the remainder of the term. Judge Wolstenholme made a Sexual Offences Prevention Order, banning Kaye from ever working with children, and warned he would have to sign on the Sex Offenders’ Register for an indefinite period of time.
