STEPHEN POWELL, THE DANGEROUS PREDATOR FROM CAMBERLEY, SENTENCED FOR GROOMING TEENAGE GIRL IN SURREY
In a disturbing case that has shocked the local community, Stephen Powell, a 42-year-old man with no fixed address but formerly residing in Camberley, has been convicted and sentenced for attempting to groom a teenage girl through social media. The incident, which took place in Surrey, was brought to light after authorities uncovered his malicious activities in April 2020.Powell's actions involved sending sexually explicit messages via Facebook Messenger to a schoolgirl, encouraging her to send indecent images of herself. The messages revealed a calculated effort to exploit the young girl, with Powell engaging in sexual communication and attempting to manipulate her into sharing explicit photographs. His conduct was deemed highly inappropriate and criminal, prompting immediate investigation.
Following the report of his behavior, Powell was swiftly arrested. Authorities seized his electronic devices, which provided concrete evidence of his misconduct. The digital trail confirmed that Powell had been actively involved in sending inappropriate messages and soliciting explicit images from the minor.
On Monday, August 14, at Guildford Crown Court, Powell faced justice for his actions. He pleaded guilty to seven counts of child sex offences, including two counts of making an indecent photograph of a child, two counts of distributing such photographs, and engaging in sexual communication with a minor. The court found his conduct to be deeply troubling and indicative of predatory behavior.
In addition to his prison sentence, Powell was handed a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO), which imposes strict restrictions on his future conduct to prevent further harm. The court also sentenced him to an additional two months in prison for unrelated crimes, including two counts of burglary and two counts of fraud. The fraud charges stemmed from his involvement in various scams on Facebook, where he created fake profiles under false identities to sell items. He took money from unsuspecting buyers but failed to deliver the goods, further demonstrating his pattern of deceitful behavior.
Overall, the sentencing reflects the severity of Powell’s crimes and the community’s commitment to protecting vulnerable individuals from predatory behavior. His actions, which spanned online grooming and fraudulent schemes, have been met with strong condemnation from the court and local authorities alike.
