SOUTHAMPTON CARE WORKER STEPHEN NICHOLSON SENTENCED FOR LIFE FOR MURDER OF 13-YEAR-OLD LUCY MCHUGH

A 25-year-old man who kidnapped, raped, and murdered a 13-year-old girl to prevent her from exposing his abusive behavior has been sentenced to life imprisonment.

Stephen Nicholson attacked Lucy McHugh at Southampton Outdoor Sports Centre last July, stabbing her 27 times.

Following a trial at Winchester Crown Court, he was convicted of her murder and three counts of sexual assault, receiving a minimum term of 33 years behind bars.

Judge Mrs Justice May stated that Lucy's potential had been 'cruelly wiped out' and characterized Nicholson as 'depraved.' Addressing Nicholson, the judge remarked: 'This was a merciless assault on a child, following months of sexual exploitation.

The prosecution described the killing as an execution, and I believe that depiction is accurate.

Nicholson’s cold narcissism combined with his rage led to her elimination, ensuring she would no longer threaten to reveal his abuse.' During the trial, the court learned that Nicholson first raped Lucy, then 12, at her home in May 2017, with later assaults occurring twice more the following week.

Mrs.

Justice May highlighted Lucy's vulnerability and how easily she became prey for Nicholson's desires.

She noted that Nicholson 'encouraged and cynically exploited' Lucy's crush on him after moving into her family’s house, describing him as 'utterly selfish and depraved.' Further, the judge stated Nicholson viewed Lucy as a threat to his comfortable life, fearing she might disclose his paedophilia.

Although social services were informed, no action was taken, as the social care team found nothing concerning during their investigations.

The judge questioned how social services could have reached such conclusions twice.

Southampton City Council declined to comment, citing an ongoing serious case review into the reports received by its social services, expected to conclude by year-end.

In addition to Lucy's case, Nicholson was convicted of sexual activity with a 14-year-old girl in 2012.

Victims' parents provided impact statements in court.

The trial also revealed Nicholson’s previous detention in 2009 when he was just 14, for hostage-taking at a Southampton children’s home, where he threatened staff with a knife and stole £1,000.

He was later convicted of affray and property damage at a young offenders’ facility, after barricading himself and threatening staff.

In 2012, Nicholson participated in a music rehabilitation project, producing a rap video that suggested he was turning his life around after earlier caring little about who he hurt.

His defense attorney, James Newton-Price QC, argued that Nicholson’s difficult upbringing, including placement in a children’s home from age 13, contributed to his behavior.

Long-time friend Richard Elmes, the partner of Lucy’s mother, invited Nicholson to live in the family home, where Lucy then described him as her ‘boyfriend’ to friends.

Police learned that Nicholson sent Lucy a message the night before her death claiming she was pregnant.

He lured her into nearby woods, where he stabbed her 27 times, including 11 in her neck, in a manner prosecutors called an 'execution-style' killing.

Subsequent investigations proved Lucy was not pregnant.

DNA evidence from clothing found in woodland close to the scene linked Nicholson to the murder.

He was also found guilty of sexual activity with another 14-year-old girl in 2012, who was also connected through the same woodland.

He was acquitted of one charge related to a sexual act with Lucy after she turned 13.
