STEPHEN NICHOLSON AND SHOCKING SEX OFFENSES IN SOUTHAMPTON AND NEW FOREST

A man from Southampton has been sentenced to prison after a series of disturbing sexual acts involving a young girl in a secluded location within the New Forest.

Stephen Nicholson, who was at the time 27 years old, was convicted of engaging in sexual activity with a schoolgirl after secretly driving her to a remote car park in Minstead.

The incident took place over a decade ago, during a period when Nicholson was employed as a bus driver responsible for transporting students from a school within the Test Valley area.

Reports indicate that Nicholson had been cultivating a deceptive rapport with multiple female students during his employment.

Over time, he formed a connection with one particular pupil through exchanged messages that quickly escalated into flirtation.

According to court proceedings, during the summer of 2008, Nicholson picked up the girl in his vehicle on an afternoon.

Instead of following the usual route home, he drove her to a hidden and quiet car park located in Minstead, where they engaged in consensual sexual activity.

To cover his tracks, Nicholson then drove the girl to her regular address, making it appear as if she had simply caught her usual bus home.

The court heard that Nicholson denied the charges, which included three counts of sexual activity with a child, but a jury convicted him following a trial.

Prosecutor Unyime Davies detailed how the girl, whose identity must remain protected for legal reasons, was vulnerable and unsure of how to handle the attention from an older man.

Davies explained that Nicholson, trusted in his role, initially built a rapport with her and other girls, which then evolved into flirtation through a series of messages.

Some of these messages were recovered from an old SIM card belonging to the victim.

Further evidence revealed that Nicholson had engaged in grooming behaviors and meticulous planning, carefully considering the timing to avoid detection—specifically, calculating how much time he had before the girl’s bus arrived at her home address.

This indicated premeditation and manipulation.

During sentencing, defense barrister Sarah Jones emphasized that Nicholson, now 37, had since established a family life, raising concerns about the impact his actions had on his loved ones.

She expressed that his wife and children—aged two, five, and seven—were deeply affected by the possibility of his incarceration, especially given the difficulty in explaining his absence.

Judge Peter Henry addressed the court, noting the significance of Nicholson’s decision not to plead guilty.

The judge remarked that a guilty plea might have resulted in a shorter sentence but nonetheless sentenced Nicholson to four years and three months in prison, to be served concurrently.

The judge characterized Nicholson as a manipulative individual who posed a danger to women, exploiting their naivety and innocence.

It was also revealed that Nicholson falsely claimed to have been an ex-Royal Marine and had worked with the RNLI in Poole, Dorset, using fabricated paperwork to support these claims.

This case underscores the danger posed by individuals who abuse positions of trust for their own gain, and highlights ongoing concerns about child grooming and exploitation within the community of Southampton and the wider Hampshire area.
