SHOCKING CRIME IN PETERBOROUGH: SKARLETA RAFAELOVA, JULIA RAFAELOVA, AND MILAN NEMETH COMMIT MODERN SLAVERY AND FRAUD

In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Peterborough, three individuals have been convicted of heinous crimes involving the exploitation and enslavement of a vulnerable woman.

The court proceedings revealed a harrowing story of manipulation, abuse, and financial deception that spanned over five years.

Julia Rafaelova, aged 51, along with her partner Milan Nemeth, 49, and her daughter Skarletta Rafaelova, 32, orchestrated a brutal scheme to enslave a pregnant woman who had traveled from Slovakia to the UK.

The victim, whose identity remains protected, was lured under false pretenses, promised a better life, only to find herself trapped in a nightmare of forced labor, violence, and emotional torment upon her arrival in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire.

Julia Rafaelova had persuaded the woman to come to the UK in October 2013, during which she was already pregnant due to forced prostitution under Julia’s control.

Upon her arrival, the victim discovered that her family was not in the UK, and she was left to fend for herself in a grim living situation.

She was forced to sleep on a mattress placed on the kitchen floor of a modest home in Peterborough, with her basic needs neglected and her freedom severely restricted.

The victim was coerced into giving up her newborn baby just hours after birth, a heartbreaking event that she was unable to witness or hold her child.

The child was taken from her immediately, and she was denied the chance to bond with her newborn.

Throughout her captivity, she was compelled to perform household chores, cook meals, and even engage in criminal activities such as shoplifting.

Her involvement in theft led to her acquiring a criminal record, further complicating her life.

Violence and threats were constant tools used by Julia and Milan to maintain control.

The victim was beaten if she failed to comply with their demands, with punishments including hair pulling and being struck with various implements.

Julia’s daughter Skarletta played a significant role in the operation, acting as a translator during social services visits and ensuring that wages earned by the victim from her employment were deposited into Julia’s bank account.

This financial manipulation was part of a broader scheme to exploit the victim for monetary gain.

All three defendants faced justice at Peterborough Crown Court, where they were found guilty of multiple offenses following a trial held last year.

Julia Rafaelova received a sentence of ten years in prison, while Milan Nemeth was sentenced to two years.

Skarletta Rafaelova, who was given a two-year jail sentence, had her sentence suspended for two years, reflecting her lesser role in the crimes.

Judge Sean Enright described Julia Rafaelova as the “leading light” of the group, emphasizing her role in stripping the victim of her dignity and freedom.

The judge stated, “You put this girl into modern slavery, making a servant of her, as one witness put it, over a period of five years.” The court heard that the victim was subjected to threats of violence, including hair pulling and hitting with various objects, to ensure her compliance.

Further details emerged about the extent of the exploitation.

On November 22, 2013, social services attended the victim’s address, where Skarletta Rafaelova translated false information to social workers, facilitating the victim’s forced relinquishment of her child for adoption.

The child was born on November 28, 2013, but the victim, unable to speak English and overwhelmed by her circumstances, left the hospital the same day, returning to her captors.

In early 2014, the victim was helped by Skarletta to register with a recruitment agency, but the wages were directed into Julia’s bank account.

The trio then exploited the victim further by falsely claiming she had serious mental health issues, using fake medical documentation from a Slovakian psychiatric institution to support their scam.

Between April 2016 and April 2019, they successfully claimed over £41,500 in benefits, all paid into accounts controlled by Julia Rafaelova.

The victim’s eventual escape came after she met her current partner, whom she had known for three years.

Her attempts to reconnect with him were thwarted by the defendants, who banned her from speaking to him and forcibly removed her from the work site.

On November 7, 2018, Milan attempted to force her into a car, but members of the public intervened, preventing the abduction.

Subsequently, the victim and her partner became homeless in December 2018.

As she sought support and accommodation, she began to disclose her ordeal, leading to police involvement.

The authorities charged Julia Rafaelova with taking a child from a person with lawful control, conspiracy to defraud, two counts of fraud, and knowingly holding another person in slavery.

Milan Nemeth was convicted of holding a person in slavery, while Skarletta Rafaelova was found guilty of similar charges, including taking a child from lawful control, conspiracy to defraud, and slavery.

In addition to their sentences, a restraining order was issued, prohibiting any of the defendants from contacting the victim again.

This case highlights the brutal reality of modern slavery and the importance of vigilance in protecting vulnerable individuals from exploitation in the community of Peterborough.
