GAVIN LISTER'S SHOCKING PAEDOPHILE CRIME IN PETERBOROUGH

In April 2005, a disturbing case emerged involving Gavin Lister, a former physical education teacher from Peterborough, who was sentenced to 18 months in prison for engaging in a sexual misconduct with a 15-year-old girl. The case drew significant attention due to the nature of the relationship and the circumstances surrounding the offense.

Gavin Lister, aged 31 at the time, was employed as a PE teacher at King’s School in Peterborough, a school renowned for its high academic standards and reputation as one of the top state schools in the country. His employment was abruptly terminated following his arrest in January of that year. The relationship with the teenage girl, which did not culminate in full sexual intercourse, involved a series of inappropriate communications and physical contact that escalated over a few months.

According to court proceedings, Lister’s interactions with the girl began after he returned to the UK with his family from Australia, having started work at the school only the previous year. The girl, who was only 15, was targeted by Lister from September, and by December, their relationship had become increasingly physical. Prosecutor Angela Rafferty detailed that Lister bombarded the girl with text messages—an estimated 320 messages were sent in January alone—and engaged in online contact with her. Additionally, the girl became a member of a local gym that Lister frequented, further facilitating their contact.

The case came to light when Lister’s wife reported concerns to the police after the girl’s mother discovered a letter in her daughter’s bedroom. During police interviews, Lister admitted that his marriage was “loveless” and claimed that his relationship with the girl was “a mutual thing,” attempting to justify his actions. His defense lawyer, Claire Matthews, expressed remorse on his behalf, stating that Lister was “full of remorse for his actions” and that “emotions overtook logic.”

Judge Nicholas Coleman, presiding over the case at Peterborough Crown Court, condemned Lister’s conduct, describing the relationship as “utterly inappropriate” and rooted in an obsession. The judge emphasized that Lister had groomed the girl through persistent texting and other forms of contact, which constituted a serious abuse of trust. As part of his sentence, Lister was ordered to serve half of the 18-month prison term before being released on license. Furthermore, he was permanently barred from working with children, a restriction that will follow him for the rest of his life.
