SHUMEL AHMED AND HIS HORRIFIC CRIMES IN SOUTHAMPTON

A brutal and violent offender, Shumel Ahmed, has been successfully taken into custody and sentenced to prison following a heinous attack in Southampton.

The incident, which involved shocking acts of sexual assault and violence, unfolded in the early hours of February 26 on Portswood Road.

Thanks to quick police work and the pivotal evidence found on Ahmed’s own phone, justice has been served.

The events began around 1am when a 19-year-old student from Southampton University was walking home after an evening out with friends.

Without warning, Ahmed, who was lurking in nearby bushes, suddenly emerged and seized her around the neck, pulling her forcefully into the nearby bushes and into a terrifying ordeal.

The victim was subjected to a savage beating, during which Ahmed punched her repeatedly in the head, causing significant injuries, and then proceeded to rape her.

Throughout the assault, he threatened to kill her, as she desperately cried out for help.

Despite her screams, the victim’s situation seemed hopeless until a stranger—a fellow university student—walking past the scene heard her blood-curdling shouts and responded.

The brave student rushed to her aid, which forced Ahmed to divert his attention and turn his violence toward the rescuer.

In the chaos, Ahmed began attacking the male student as well, demanding money and his mobile phone in a further attempt to rob him.

The male victim managed to fight back, striking Ahmed and escaping the scene.

The attack left the young woman with multiple injuries, including a hairline fracture to her jaw, while the male victim sustained a chipped tooth, concussion, and a black eye.

Responding swiftly, police officers were on-site within minutes after residents had reported hearing the screams and had set up a cordon around the area.

Remarkably, within just 90 minutes, officers apprehended Ahmed as he was returning to the scene.

A search of his phone revealed a selfie of him wearing a baseball cap identical to the one found nearby — a crucial piece of evidence.

Further forensic analysis confirmed that both Ahmed and the victim’s DNA were present on the baseball cap.

Additionally, her DNA was found on his underpants, confirming their involvement in the assault and rape.

In police interviews, it was also revealed that a couple driving along Portswood Road had seen a man matching Ahmed’s description chasing another woman, who was running away from him.

Concerned for her safety, they stopped to offer her a lift.

During the trial, Ahmed, of Portswood Road, pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including rape and assault with intent to rob.

His solicitor, Christopher Bauer, argued that Ahmed had shown remorse and had no prior criminal record for sexual offenses.

Nonetheless, Judge Gary Burrell sentenced him to a total of 14 years in prison—10 years for the rape and an additional four for the assault, to run consecutively.

Judge Burrell described the attack as frightening, emphasizing its severe physical and psychological impact on both victims.

He also highlighted the crucial role played by the student who intervened, stating, "Goodness knows what would have happened if he hadn’t stepped in because you were beating that girl very badly and she sustained some serious injuries." Reacting to the case after sentencing, Detective Sergeant Paul Harrison stressed the importance of the evidence obtained through the suspect’s phone.

"This was a pivotal piece of evidence that allowed us to charge him before forensic results were available, making Southampton a safer place within 24 hours," he explained.

He also praised the bravery of the victim, who endured a terrifying ordeal yet managed to keep screaming and calling for help, alerting witnesses to the attack.

The male victim’s quick decision to confront Ahmed also played a vital role in bringing him to justice.

Thanks to the diligent work of law enforcement and the courageous actions of witnesses, Ahmed’s reign of violence in Southampton has been brought to an end, ensuring that he is now off the streets and facing significant prison time for his reckless and violent acts.
