SHAUN TAYLOR CAUGHT IN BARNSTAPLE AND OLDHAM CHILD SEX OFFENDER SCANDAL

In a disturbing case that spans the towns of Barnstaple and Oldham, Shaun Taylor, a man with a troubling online history, has been brought to justice after engaging in a series of predatory behaviors targeting what he believed were underage girls.

The case highlights the dangers of online grooming and the efforts of vigilant groups to combat such crimes.

It was January 2020 when authorities confirmed that Taylor, who had previously resided in Barnstaple, North Devon, had been actively communicating with what he thought were three teenage girls aged 13 and 14.

These interactions took place over a period of five days, during which Taylor sent explicit messages and photographs of himself in the nude.

He also solicited the girls to touch themselves and to send him images of their own bodies.

Unbeknownst to him, the girls he was communicating with were not real; they were decoys created by the 'Justice for the Innocent' group, a vigilant organization dedicated to exposing online predators.

At the time of these exchanges, Taylor was living alone in a bedsit and had recently lost his job.

After the police interviewed him, he moved to Oldham, where he continued his online activities.

It was only last month that authorities managed to trace him to his new location.

He was subsequently detained and returned to Devon to face justice.

The 47-year-old, who resides on Manchester Road in Oldham, pleaded guilty to six counts of attempting to incite a child to engage in sexual activity and one count of attempting to cause a child to watch sexual activity.

During his appearance at Exeter Crown Court, Judge Peter Johnson sentenced Taylor to a three-year community order, which includes mandatory attendance at a sex offenders' course.

The judge emphasized the seriousness of Taylor's actions, stating, “You seem to have led a normal life until last February, when you encouraged three young girls aged 13 or 14, or you thought them to be, to touch themselves.

At a very early stage, you sent pictures of yourself, albeit relatively innocent but of a suggestive kind.

You were told by one that what you asked her to do had hurt her but encouraged her to do it again.

You have experienced a taste of custody and been inside for 10 weeks, and I am told by the probation report that you have lost more or less everything that can be lost.” In addition to the community order, Taylor was ordered to register as a sex offender and was placed under a Sexual Harm Prevention Order.

This order grants police the authority to monitor his internet activity closely, aiming to prevent any further offenses.

The 'Justice for the Innocent' group, along with another organization called 'Totnes Justice,' confronted Taylor at his old bedsit in Barnstaple.

The encounter was filmed and subsequently uploaded to YouTube, where it has garnered hundreds of views.

The footage shows a member of the group speaking to Taylor through a partially open door, capturing the moment of confrontation and the group's efforts to hold him accountable.

Earlier, in December 2019, the same group had successfully trapped Taylor in Barnstaple after he attempted to groom a girl he believed to be 13.

During that incident, Taylor filmed himself performing a sexual act directed at the decoy, who was part of the 'Justice for the Innocent' operation.

The footage of this confrontation was also uploaded online, with over 500 views on YouTube.

It depicts the moment when the group members confronted him at his former home, with one member speaking to him through the door.

Investigations revealed that Taylor had repeatedly asked the decoy to touch herself sexually and to send explicit images.

After the police traced him to Oldham, he was detained last month and returned to Devon to face charges.

His case was adjourned at Exeter Crown Court, where Judge Timothy Rose remanded him in custody and scheduled the next hearing for the following month.

The judge indicated that prison was the most likely outcome, given the nature of the offenses, which involved an attempt to engage in sexual activity with a non-existent girl, with a significant age disparity and persistent conduct.

In summary, Shaun Taylor's case underscores the ongoing battle against online child exploitation and the importance of community and law enforcement cooperation in bringing offenders to justice.

His actions, uncovered through vigilant online groups and police work, serve as a stark reminder of the dangers lurking in digital spaces and the need for continued vigilance.
