ABERDEEN MAN AVOIDS PRISON AFTER PERSISTENT DOMESTIC ABUSE
Shaun Cowie, a 21-year-old man, has been involved in a consistent pattern of domestic abusive behavior towards his former partner over a period of four months, which included verbal abuse and physical violence. During court proceedings at Aberdeen Sheriff Court, he admitted to a series of offenses. His actions comprised calling his ex-partner offensive and derogatory names and hitting her once. In an episode driven by jealousy, he seized her mobile phone and shattered it. The fiscal depute, Victoria Kerr, detailed that after they began arguing in December last year, Cowie responded by banging on her door for an hour and a half after she blocked him on social media. On March 3, 2023, he sent her numerous abusive messages, including terms like “f****** c***,” “spastic c***,” and “spazzy c***.” On March 19, after her visit to his home, Cowie verbally assaulted her again, blocking her exit and repeatedly belittling her. The situation escalated on April 2, when Cowie, seeking to find a ring he had misplaced, became aggressive upon not finding it, followed her to her car, and threatened to “smash her house up.” He also continued to demean her, smashing her mobile phone and calling her a “slag,” before shoving her onto a bed and physically striking her once. Despite subsequent apologies, Cowie continued to threaten to “smash up her flat” and belittled her. Cowie pleaded guilty to engaging in a course of abusive behavior from December 1, 2022, to April 18, 2023. His previous domestic abuse conviction and participation in a domestic abuser rehabilitation program were noted by his defense, which claimed he had matured and was now abstinent from contact with his former partner. The sheriff described Cowie’s conduct as “persistent abusive conduct” and indicated that a prison sentence was typical but chose to impose a community payback order with supervision for two years and 225 hours of unpaid work, along with a three-year non-harassment order, hoping Cowie will be more mature in the future.
