SHANE TRUCKLE SENTENCED FOR RAPE IN SOUTHAMPTON AND NETLEY

A man identified as Shane Truckle has been sentenced to a substantial term of imprisonment for the heinous crime of raping a woman while she was at her most vulnerable in Southampton.

The incident, which occurred in 2017, has left lasting scars both physically and emotionally on the victim, who has been plagued by nightmares and heightened anxiety ever since.

According to court proceedings, Truckle, aged 41 and residing on New Road in Netley, was convicted of this serious offense after a trial that concluded in December 2022.

The jury found him guilty of one count of rape, confirming the allegations that he assaulted the woman without her knowledge as she dozed off on a sofa at a property.

The court heard how the victim’s life has been profoundly affected by the attack.

In a statement read aloud during the sentencing hearing, she expressed the ongoing impact of the assault, stating, “It had been on my mind all the time.” She further revealed her struggles with social outings, confessing, “I don't like to go out for a meal and if I see people that look like him then I go into a panic.

Whenever I go out somewhere I feel I am looking for him.

I have nightmares, the re-occurring dreams of what happened.” The woman described feeling “depressed and anxious” as a direct consequence of the crime.

The case was hindered initially by a technical issue when police submitted evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), necessitating the resubmission of the case in January 2021.

Despite this delay, the justice system ultimately proceeded with the prosecution, emphasizing their commitment to bring offenders to justice regardless of the time elapsed since the crime.

Judge Nicholas Rowland handed down the sentence of six years and nine months in prison to Truckle, acknowledging the profound and ongoing suffering of the victim.

Addressing Truckle directly, he stated, “This is on the face of it a spontaneous opportunistic offence by you taking advantage of a vulnerable victim,” highlighting the predatory nature of the assault.

During the courtroom proceedings, Truckle’s family was visibly distressed as he was led away to begin serving his sentence.

The judge remarked that, aside from this criminal act, Truckle was, “an otherwise hard-working family man,” a statement that underscores the complexity often present in cases involving individuals with otherwise respectable livelihoods.

Prosecutor Paul Fairley outlined Truckle’s previous criminal record, which includes convictions for theft, burglary, drink-driving, and driving while disqualified.

Importantly, however, he had no prior sex offenses, which suggests that this attack was an isolated but profoundly damaging incident.

Defence counsel Michael Mason argued that Truckle maintains full-time employment as a site manager, overseeing shop fittings, thereby emphasizing his ties to the community and his role as a responsible individual outside of this criminal act.

Following the sentencing, Detective Sergeant Claire Grant conveyed her thoughts on the case, saying, “This crime has had a lasting impact on the victim, and her life.

It takes great courage for people to come forward and speak to us about incidents of this nature, and that should never be underestimated.

I hope this case goes to show that regardless of how long ago a rape happened, we will work tirelessly to target perpetrators and provide specialist support to survivors.

We want our communities to know that we stand with them, and will do all in our power to bring the offenders of these horrendous crimes to justice.” A police spokeswoman also emphasized the complexities involved in such investigations, stating, “Due to complexities in this investigation it took time to gather sufficient evidence to charge Shane Truckle.

As with any investigation, there are multiple moving parts that mean it can take time; each investigation is unique and as such, the time from reporting to file submission can vary.”
