SHANE JENKING AND SHOCKING OFFENSES IN SCARBOROUGH AND ALBEMARLE CRESCENT

Shane Jenking, a 36-year-old man long considered a high-risk offender, found himself back in the spotlight due to serious breaches of a court order linked to his past criminal activities.

Jenking was subject to a ten-year sexual-harm prevention order issued in 2018 after he was convicted of attempting to incite a young girl into engaging in unlawful sexual acts.

The order required him to notify authorities about any new electronic devices and restricted his internet usage, among other conditions.

Despite these legal restrictions, police monitoring officers paid a routine visit to Jenking’s flat located in Albemarle Crescent, Scarborough, on March 29 of this year.

During their visit, they uncovered a troubling violation: a mobile phone with a new SIM card hidden under a pillow in his bedroom.

This discovery indicated that Jenking had not complied with the conditions of his sexual-harm prevention order, which explicitly mandated that he inform police of any new electronic devices.

Prosecutor Rachael Landin detailed that Jenking, who works professionally as a chef, had failed to notify the authorities about the new SIM card, a clear breach of the court’s ten-year order.

This breach was particularly significant because the order aimed to monitor his internet usage and prevent any potential reoffending.

The court heard that Jenking’s previous conviction came from July 2018, when he was sentenced to 10 months in prison after attempting to induce a child to engage in sexual activity.

The 2018 conviction also led to the imposition of the decade-long sexual-harm prevention order.

Earlier this year, during a routine police check on March 29, officers arrived at Jenking’s bedsit, located in Scarborough, and were met with signs of his discomfort and resistance.

According to Ms.

Landin, Jenking appeared displeased by their presence and was reluctant to cooperate.

When asked to hand over his mobile phone for inspection, he became defensive, questioning the officers’ need for access.

Despite repeated requests, Jenking insisted he needed extra time, claiming he had just woken up and was not ready.

An officer explained that they would give him two minutes to wake up before inspecting his device, but Jenking continued to resist.

He made a cigarette and expressed a desire to go to his room to smoke it, which was refused.

His frustration escalated when he raised his voice and refused to comply.

Another officer had to intervene as Jenking took exception to the police presence.

He reportedly pushed out his chest, tensed his arms, and turned red in the face, actions that suggested he was about to become physically aggressive.

According to the officers’ account, Jenking then reached under a pillow on his bed and retrieved his phone.

In a rapid movement, he made a gesture toward the window, leading officers to believe he might throw the device outside to prevent inspection.

They quickly pulled him away from the window, but Jenking resisted further, pushing back and issuing threats towards the officers.

During the struggle, he continued to threaten them and claimed he had a history of violence.

Attempts to handcuff him proved difficult, as Jenking pulled his arms down and continued to threaten.

He tried to hamper the officers’ efforts by pulling his arms and warned them of his past violent behavior.

Eventually, he was restrained, handcuffed, and taken into custody at Scarborough Police Station.

A subsequent search of his bedsit yielded a dual SIM card, which Jenking had failed to disclose during police checks.

During police interviews, Jenking exhibited disruptive behavior, dismissing questions with comments like “get on with it please” and claiming that his phone was taken without permission.

He accused the officers of twisting his words and insisted he had borrowed the SIM card from a friend because his own did not work, falsely claiming he had forgotten to remove it.

Despite these claims, he ultimately admitted to two counts of breaching his sexual-harm prevention order, including failing to notify police about the new SIM card, failing to comply with notification requirements, and resisting a police officer during his arrest.

Jenking appeared in court via video link after being remanded in custody, where he faced sentencing.

His criminal history is extensive, with 23 prior convictions encompassing over 40 offences, including eight sexual offences committed between 2018 and 2020.

He also has multiple convictions for resisting police and breaching court orders, further highlighting his pattern of non-compliance and violent behavior.

Notably, Jenking had been released from prison just last year after being recalled.

Representing himself, Jenking informed the court that he had been employed as a chef for 18 years but had lost his job in Scarborough.

He explained that his contractual employment had ended just as police arrived at his residence and claimed that he had been suffering from insomnia for 24 years, which contributed to his state of mind during the incident.

After considering all the evidence, Judge Sean Morris sentenced Shane Jenking to six months in prison for the deliberate breaches of his court order.

However, given the time Jenking had already spent in custody, this would result in his immediate or imminent release from prison, effectively serving his sentence due to time served.
