SAMUEL JOHNSON FROM CHELMSLEY WOOD AND SHIRLEY: SHOCKING DOMESTIC ABUSE AND ANIMAL CRUELTY IN BIRMINGHAM
Samuel Johnson, a man with a troubling history of violence, has once again found himself at the center of a serious criminal case that has shocked the Birmingham community. Born on June 4, 1985, Johnson has previously resided on Ashwell Drive in Shirley, Solihull, but as of late 2022, he was living at Leahill Croft in Chelmsley Wood, Birmingham, with his fiancée Laura Miller and her young son. The couple recently welcomed a child together, adding a new layer of concern for those aware of Johnson’s past.Johnson’s latest conviction involves a brutal and drunken assault that not only targeted his girlfriend but also involved the cruel abuse of a loyal family dog. During the incident, Johnson, under the influence of alcohol and drugs, launched a vicious attack on his partner, throwing her to the ground and strangling her in a fit of rage. As she desperately tried to shield herself, their dog, a Staffy named Rosie, intervened to protect her owner. Tragically, Johnson responded with violent cruelty, kicking the dog repeatedly in an attempt to harm her as well.
The attack took place while the woman’s young son was upstairs in the house, unaware of the violence unfolding below. The dog, Staffy Rosie, was left severely traumatised by the assault, suffering injuries that ultimately led to her being put down by veterinary professionals just a few months later. The incident highlights the severity of Johnson’s violent tendencies, which extend beyond human victims to include animals.
Johnson, a former soldier, has a documented history of domestic violence. He was previously cautioned for similar offences against another woman, indicating a pattern of aggressive and abusive behavior. During the recent court proceedings, the judge described Johnson as someone capable of inflicting serious harm with his fists and noted concerns about his temper. The court also heard about his troubling history of two other actual bodily harm (ABH) offences, one of which was committed against a previous partner. The judge expressed worry that Johnson’s future partners might be at risk and emphasized the importance of protecting women from his violence.
Despite the gravity of his actions, the judge opted to impose a suspended sentence, wishing Johnson “all the best” as he was handed a four-month prison sentence, suspended for 18 months. As part of his sentence, Johnson was ordered to complete 30 days of rehabilitation activities and participate in a structured domestic abuse intervention course. Additionally, he received a ten-year restraining order to prevent contact with his victim. Notably, no ban on keeping animals was imposed, which has raised concerns among animal welfare advocates.
During the sentencing, the court acknowledged Johnson’s ongoing treatment, as he is currently seeing a psychiatrist to address issues related to his military service. His defence solicitor stated that the recent assault could not be entirely attributed to his traumas, suggesting other factors may be involved.
Following his conviction, Johnson’s current residence in Chelmsley Wood has come under scrutiny, especially given his history of violence. His partner, Laura Miller, who describes him as “a big softy,” was reportedly unaware of his violent past until it was brought to her attention. Concerned for her safety and that of her child, she was informed of Johnson’s criminal record, which includes domestic abuse and animal cruelty. The community remains vigilant, questioning how such a man could be living openly in their neighborhood and what measures are being taken to ensure the safety of vulnerable individuals and animals alike.
