KEVIN HUGHES GROOMS TEENAGE GIRL IN CHELMSLEY WOOD AND SOLIHULL, ESCAPES JAIL

In September 2012, a disturbing case emerged involving Kevin Hughes, a former teacher from Lyndon School, who engaged in a deeply troubling and inappropriate relationship with a 14-year-old girl from Solihull.

Hughes, aged 30 and residing on Woodclose Road in Chelmsley Wood, was found to have groomed the young girl over a period of time, starting from when she was just 14 years old.

His actions included persuading her to send him explicit photographs and engaging in a series of inappropriate communications that went far beyond the boundaries of a professional teacher-student relationship.

According to court reports, Hughes initially asked the girl to email him photographs of herself.

She complied, and shortly thereafter, he requested her mobile phone number.

This led to a pattern of regular text messages and emails, in which Hughes made flirtatious and flattering comments, gradually escalating the nature of their interactions.

Prosecutor Richard Franck described the relationship as evolving from mere communication to something more intimate, noting that by the end of that year, their exchanges included kisses sent via email, culminating in them engaging in 'French kissing.' As the relationship progressed, the girl’s mother grew suspicious of Hughes’s behavior.

Concerned, she eventually reported the teacher to the school authorities.

Hughes claimed that although they had kissed, he insisted that sexual intercourse did not occur until after the girl turned 16 and had left the school.

However, the police investigation painted a more disturbing picture.

When Hughes was arrested, authorities seized his computer, which contained a staggering 1,346 indecent images of children, including 44 images of the girl in explicit poses.

The computer also held four 'level two' movies and four 'level three' images depicting the girl and Hughes naked in bed together.

Hughes faced multiple charges, including two counts of engaging in sexual activity with a child and four counts of making indecent images of children.

During the court proceedings at Warwick Crown Court, Hughes pleaded guilty to these charges.

His defense lawyer, David Jackson, argued that Hughes’s behavior demonstrated a clear interest in teenage females, as evidenced by the images found on his computer and his conduct with the girl.

Jackson emphasized that Hughes had lost his good character and his professional standing, having already been dismissed from his teaching position.

Judge Alan Parker, presiding over the case, was unequivocal in his condemnation.

He stated, “He groomed her and corrupted her.

I will not use the word relationship because that dignifies a deeply repellent association.” The judge described Hughes’s actions as a grotesque and persistent breach of trust, highlighting that the sexual activity involved was not only repeated but actively sexual in nature.

Hughes’s conduct was characterized as a gross breach of his professional responsibilities, demonstrating a flagrant disregard for the safety and well-being of the young girl involved.

Despite the severity of the case, Hughes was not sentenced to immediate imprisonment.

Instead, Warwick Crown Court imposed a community sentence for three years, with the condition that he attend a sex offender rehabilitation program.

Additionally, Hughes was disqualified from working with children for life and has already been dismissed from his teaching role.

The case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of grooming and the importance of safeguarding vulnerable young people from exploitation and abuse.
