September 2012 Solihull teacher who groomed 14-year-old girl for sex avoids jail A SOLIHULL maths teacher groomed a schoolgirl from the age of 14 – and later kept pictures of them naked in bed together has avoided a prison sentence. Kevin Edward Hughes, 30, engaged in what a judge described as ‘a grotesque association’ with the teenager who he had persuaded to send him indecent pictures of herself. But despite his ‘gross breach of trust’ the former Lyndon School teacher escaped being jailed when sentenced at Warwick Crown Court. Instead, he was given a community sentence for three years, with a condition of attending a sex offender programme. He was disqualified from working with children for life and has already been sacked from his school job. Hughes, of Woodclose Road, Chelmsley Wood, had pleaded guilty to two charges of sexual activity with a child and four of making indecent pictures of children. Prosecutor Richard Franck said the pervert teacher had asked the girl to send him an email with photographs of herself. She did so and shortly afterwards he asked for her mobile phone number, after which regular texts and emails were exchanged in which he made flattering comments. “The relationship was no longer one of teacher and pupil,” said Mr Franck. Emails ending with kisses had progressed by the end of that year to them ‘French kissing.’ The girl’s mother eventually became suspicious and eventually reported the teacher to the school. Hughes claimed although they had kissed, they did not have intercourse until after she was 16 and they were no longer at the same school. But after he was arrested the police seized his computer, which contained 1,346 level one images of children in indecent poses, including 44 of the girl. There were also four ‘level two’ movies and four level three images of the two of them naked in bed. David Jackson, defending, said: “This defendant’s behaviour demonstrates an interest in teenage females by the images found and his conduct with the complainant. “He has lost his good character in a significant way, and he has lost his profession.” Mr Jackson said he did not put any blame on the girl, to which Judge Alan Parker responded: “He groomed her and corrupted her. I will not use the word relationship because that dignifies a deeply repellent association “The sexual activity was repeated and persistent. It was described on the indictment as kissing, but it was actively sexual kissing. “You were engaged in a grotesque association with this girl in flagrant disregard of your professional responsibilities, demonstrating a gross breach of trust.”
