ROY DUNGAY FROM BILLINGHAM SENTENCED TO SIX YEARS FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES IN TEESSIDE

In a case that has sent shockwaves through the community of Billingham, Roy Dungay, aged 56, was sentenced to six years in prison after pleading guilty to multiple serious offences involving the sexual abuse of young children. The offences came to light during a court hearing at Teesside Crown Court, where it was revealed that Dungay had engaged in disturbing acts against three six-year-old girls while working as a teaching assistant.

According to court records, Dungay, who resided in Kennedy Gardens, Billingham, had been employed by an organization that provides educational support for children with special needs. His employment was initially granted due to his lack of prior convictions and his expertise in computer technology. However, his role involved direct interaction with vulnerable children, which he exploited for his own illicit purposes.

The court heard that Dungay had assaulted three young girls, all aged six, during his time working with them. The assaults occurred while he was teaching them reading and computer skills, activities that ostensibly aimed to aid their development. One of the victims confided in her mother and brother about the abuse, prompting her family to report the matter to authorities. Before police could intervene, Dungay committed further assaults on two additional girls the following day.

In a chilling revelation, Dungay wrote a signed confession letter to the school, which was later discovered by police at his home. The letter contained the disturbing statement: “I don’t feel guilty about what I did, why should I?” This confession underscored his lack of remorse and highlighted the severity of his actions.

During the court proceedings, Dungay’s defense lawyer, Peter Sabison, acknowledged the disturbing nature of his client’s fantasies, which had been documented in defence reports. Sabison stated, “I cannot step back from the fact that the sexual fantasies that are highlighted in defence reports are very disturbing. But he seems to be sorry for what he has done. He cooperated with the police and the doctor, he made striking admissions, he has requested help, and he is anxious to obtain any treatment.”

However, Judge Peter Armstrong was unequivocal in his sentencing. Addressing Dungay directly, the judge remarked, “You deliberately sought out the opportunity to interfere with young children. Although to your credit you have managed to avoid acting on your fantasies until now, now that you have committed these offences it seems to me that it is necessary for this court to pass sentences which will protect the public for a very considerable time.”

As a result, Roy Dungay was sentenced to six years in prison. Additionally, he was handed a lifelong ban from working with children and was ordered to register as a sex offender for the remainder of his life, ensuring that he remains under strict supervision and monitoring to prevent any future harm to the community of Billingham and beyond.
