SOUTHAMPTON RAPIST JAILED FOR OVER EIGHT YEARS AFTER VICTIM’S BRAVE TESTIMONY
A 28-year-old man named Rosario Dos Reis was convicted and sentenced after being found guilty of raping and sexually assaulting a woman in Southampton. The incident occurred at Palmerston Park on 19 February, when the victim, identified as Olivia, was walking early in the morning after a night out.
She reported feeling very vulnerable at that moment, as her alcohol consumption left her intoxicated and she passed out during the assault.
Olivia explained that she was held and couldn’t escape, while most bystanders ignored her suffering.
The police acted quickly following a witness’s call to 999, and Reis was arrested within approximately one hour at Southampton Coach Station.
During court proceedings, Reis admitted to the act of rape partway through.
He was sentenced to eight years and four months of incarceration.
The judge noted that Reis took advantage of a victim unable to resist, and also ordered an extended license period of six years, with deportation considered once his sentence is served.
Olivia’s victim impact statement expressed that the assault “destroyed my family life” and caused her to feel insecure walking alone.
Law enforcement and support staff commended her courage in speaking out, recognizing the pivotal role of victim testimonies in securing convictions.
Originally from East Timor, Reis accepted guilty pleas on charges of rape and other sexual offences, with further charges on file.
This case underscores the wider challenges in prosecuting sexual crimes, particularly given that less than 2% of reported rapes result in charges or court proceedings, according to official data.
The court highlighted that Olivia’s testimony was instrumental in ensuring Reis’s conviction and removal from society, and prosecutors emphasized that the justice system is improving in its handling of sexual offense cases.
