LITHERLAND PAEDOPHILE ROBERT NYE FACES JAIL AFTER GOING ON THE RUN FROM SEX OFFENCES IN LIVERPOOL

In December 2014, Robert Nye, a man from Litherland, was sentenced to a lengthy prison term of 19 years after being convicted of a series of serious historic sexual offences involving three young children. The court heard that Nye, aged 56 at the time, had committed these heinous acts against children as young as three and four, leaving lasting psychological scars.

The sentencing took place at Liverpool Crown Court, where Judge Denis Watson, QC, addressed Nye’s actions and their devastating impact on the victims. Nye, residing on Vincent Road in Litherland, was found guilty of multiple counts of sexual assault and indecent assault involving two boys and a girl. Despite the conviction, Nye maintained his innocence and was seen shaking his head in the dock during the sentencing.

The court was informed of the disturbing details of Nye’s offences. It was revealed that after committing a serious assault on a four-year-old boy, Nye immediately proceeded to sexually abuse a five-year-old boy. The abuse against the older boy occurred on two additional occasions, with Nye also abusing the younger boy. The offences against the girl involved her at ages three and four. The judge highlighted that due to her tender age, the young girl had no understanding that Nye’s actions were wrong, which left her extremely confused and traumatized.

During the trial, it was also disclosed that Nye, who was working as a taxi driver at the time, failed to attend the final day of proceedings. As a result, the judge sentenced him in absentia to an additional two months in jail for breaching bail conditions under the Bail Act. Nye’s defense attorney, Ian Whitehurst, explained that Nye’s absence was due to him being heavily medicated with anti-depressants, sleeping tablets, and painkillers following a serious road traffic accident. Nye had woken up late that evening and only turned himself in to police approximately 26 hours later. Mr. Whitehurst emphasized that Nye had no prior convictions and had some family support.

As part of his sentence, Nye was ordered to register as a sex offender for life and was subjected to an indefinite Sex Offenders Prevention Order. Judge Watson emphasized the profound and lasting impact of Nye’s crimes, stating, “In each of these three cases, these were life-changing events, and all the victims have been scarred in different ways for years.” The judge specifically noted that one of the boys, who was just five years old when abused in the early 1980s, had never fully recovered from the trauma inflicted by Nye.

Furthermore, the court was told that another male victim had reported the abuse to police when he was 13, but due to the standards of the time in 1992, the case was not prosecuted. The court also heard about the emotional toll on the victims, with one female victim revealing that she had self-harmed and attempted suicide, including hanging herself, throwing herself under a bus, and cutting her arteries. She expressed her desire for Nye to be kept away from children and to face justice, stating, “I don’t care about revenge, I just want people to know what he has done.”

Another victim, a young girl, described how Nye’s actions had destroyed her life, and she expressed relief that the court case was over, although she acknowledged that Nye’s flight from justice had left the matter unresolved. The victims’ statements underscored the severe psychological harm they endured, which the judge acknowledged during sentencing.

Earlier in the proceedings, Nye was found guilty of one count of serious sexual assault and six counts of indecent assault after a week-long trial. Despite being present at each day of the trial, Nye breached his bail conditions by fleeing while on remand. He was eventually located and handed himself in to police in Cheshire after a warrant was issued for his arrest. The court was told that Nye’s victims, aged between three and seven, had their lives profoundly affected by his actions, with one victim describing how the abuse had “destroyed” her life.

Judge Watson made it clear that Nye would face a very lengthy period of custody, stating, “I will sentence you on Tuesday. Between now and then, you will remain in custody.” The court’s decision reflected the gravity of Nye’s offences and the enduring harm caused to his victims, emphasizing the need for justice and protection for vulnerable children in the community of Litherland and Liverpool.
