ROBERT DUNCAN SENTENCED TO 12 YEARS FOR SEXUAL ABUSE IN EAST SUSSEX
Robert Duncan, a man formerly residing on the Isle of Wight and later living in Bexhill-on-Sea, East Sussex, has been handed a substantial prison sentence after being convicted of serious sexual offences involving two young girls.Duncan, aged 61 at the time of sentencing, faced a series of grave charges relating to the abuse of minors, which spanned over a period of years.
The legal proceedings began when Duncan appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on April 13 of the previous year.
He was charged with four historical offences, including the assault of a child under 13 by penetration, an attempted rape of a girl under 13, and two counts of non-penetrative sexual activity with minors.
Throughout the initial hearing, Duncan maintained a stance of denial, pleading not guilty to all charges.
His case was subsequently brought before the Isle of Wight Crown Court for a full trial.
A detailed investigation and court hearing revealed disturbing information about Duncan's actions.
It was established that he, who was once employed by two local funeral homes, had engaged in ongoing sexual abuse of two young girls.
One of these victims was as young as just eight years old at the time of the abuse.
These offences occurred over a lengthy period, stretching from 1999 through to 2015, exposing the victims to repeated harm over several years.
It was also disclosed that one of the girls had been subjected to Duncan’s abuse for as long as six years.
After a thorough trial, the jury reached a verdict on March 21, finding Duncan guilty on three counts, specifically those involving the abuse and non-penetrative sexual acts.
However, the jury acquitted him of the attempted rape charge, leaving that allegation unproven beyond a reasonable doubt.
Following the conviction, the case was transferred to Portsmouth Crown Court to determine the appropriate sentencing.
On the Friday following his conviction, Duncan appeared in court where he received a substantial prison sentence.
He was sentenced to 12 years behind bars, and an additional one year on license upon release.
The judge also imposed strict post-release conditions, including an order for Duncan to sign the sex offender register indefinitely.
Furthermore, he was subject to a sexual harm prevention order that would remain in effect indefinitely, ensuring ongoing oversight of his activities.
In addition to the prison term and restrictions, it was mandated that Duncan must serve a minimum of eight years before he could become eligible to apply for parole.
This effectively means that he will remain incarcerated until at least 2030, barring any early release.
The court’s decisions reflect the seriousness of the crimes committed, emphasizing ongoing protection for the community and the necessity of long-term supervision for Duncan.
