RICHARD TOWNSEND AND MARK METCALFE FROM SOUTHAMPTON JAILED FOR CHILD SEX ABUSE
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Southampton, Richard Townsend, aged 57, and his partner Mark Metcalfe, aged 56, have been convicted of heinous sexual offenses involving minors.The crimes span over a decade, from 1996 to 2006, and involve the abuse of two young boys and an additional male victim believed to be no older than 15.
Richard Townsend, a professional accountant by trade, was found guilty of multiple serious charges, including rape, indecent assault, indecency with a child, and assault by penetration.
The court heard that Townsend had engaged in prolonged abuse of one boy from the ages of 11 to 15, and another from 13 to 16, over several years.
His actions were uncovered after a thorough investigation by the National Crime Agency (NCA), which was initiated due to Townsend’s online offending activities involving child abuse material.
The NCA’s investigation revealed that Townsend had used an online conferencing platform dedicated to child sex offenders, where he shared and encouraged the distribution of indecent images.
When authorities seized his electronic devices, they discovered a disturbing collection of 158 indecent images of children, 38 of which were classified in the most severe category.
This evidence was instrumental in securing his conviction, which followed a guilty plea to charges of encouraging the distribution of indecent images and creating such images himself.
In March of the previous year, Townsend had received a two-year suspended sentence for these offenses.
Further evidence uncovered during the investigation included online chat records in which Townsend openly discussed his ongoing abuse.
In one exchange, he was asked, “Do u get 2 see him a lot?” to which he responded, “Luck, patience n planning :)”.
This exchange highlighted the premeditated nature of his actions and his continued involvement in abusing children.
Investigators also uncovered a homemade video, believed to have been shot by Townsend himself, depicting his partner Mark Metcalfe sexually abusing an unknown male.
An expert witness estimated that the male in the video was at most 15 years old.
The video was discovered during a search of the couple’s home on Copsewood Road in Southampton, where authorities also found other evidence linking them to the crimes.
Following Townsend’s initial online offending charges, two victims came forward to report non-recent abuse, which led to the full scope of the case being brought to court.
The trial lasted three weeks, during which both defendants faced multiple charges.
Townsend was convicted of 14 counts, including rape, indecent assault, indecency with a child, and assault by penetration.
Metcalfe was found guilty of two sexual assaults and one indecent assault.
Today, at Southampton Crown Court, the court sentenced Townsend to a life-long registration on the sex offenders register, reflecting the severity and ongoing risk associated with his crimes.
Mark Metcalfe was also ordered to register as a sex offender for a period of ten years.
The sentencing marked a significant step in delivering justice for the victims and reaffirming the community’s stance against such heinous acts.
