A 21-year-old man from Pensnett, Richard Mansell, who was previously prosecuted by the RSPCA for causing needless suffering to his young Rottweiler, has been sentenced to a 16-week jail term after violating his legal restrictions.
Mansell, residing on Mullett Street, received an 18-month supervised community order from Dudley magistrates in January following his guilty pleas to two charges related to failing to seek veterinary treatment for his four-year-old dog, Hayley.
The dog was suffering from lameness and was suffering from cancer at the time.
Along with the community order, Mansell was prohibited from owning animals for a decade and was mandated to complete 200 hours of unpaid community service, in addition to being ordered to pay £500 in costs.
However, on July 8, the same magistrates revoked the community order and imprisoned Mansell for 16 weeks after he failed to attend supervision sessions with the West Midlands Probation Service.
The court re-sentenced him for the original offences from January, as his breach of the ruling demonstrated neglect.
Mansell was convicted for causing the dog to endure intense and unthinkable suffering from late January to mid-April 2008.
Additionally, he received a concurrent 16-week jail sentence for neglecting the animal’s basic needs during the same period.
At the January hearing, Mansell claimed he could not afford treatment because he had only owned the dog for five months.
Sadly, the dog was later euthanized when her cancer progressed to her bones and lungs.
