RICHARD CROOK SENTENCED TO 14 YEARS IN PRISON IN SOUTHAMPTON FOR SEXUAL ABUSE

Richard Crook, a former Scout leader and volunteer, was convicted of engaging in a sexual relationship with a teenage girl from Southampton, a court heard.

Crook, who also worked as a postal worker, carried out abuse against a boy inside a Royal Mail van and had formed a friendship with the victim's father, even discussing starting a family together, the court was told.

The 41-year-old, formerly living on Vine Road, was aware that his victim was only 14 and would have seen her in her school uniform, prosecutor Gary Rutter stated.

Crook took her to hotels for sexual encounters, with CCTV footage presented showing him and the girl at Sutton Scotney services on the A34.

Crook, whose occupation involves installing CCTV security systems, was eventually detained after raising suspicion.

During investigations, another man who had downloaded indecent images claimed he hadn't considered any harm to children.

Additionally, a separate individual who posed as a 'paedophile hunter' in messages to a 12-year-old girl was involved in the case.

Despite being released on bail, Crook continued his relationship with the girl until she confided in a teacher about being five weeks pregnant.

At Southampton Crown Court, Crook pleaded guilty to four charges of sexual activity with a child, relating to incidents occurring between July and December of the previous year.

During mitigation, Crook's lawyer, Richard Tutt, explained that Crook had asked him to apologise to the victim and her family, noting that Crook's marriage was failing and he had been drinking heavily.

Judge Christopher Parker QC described the case as involving grooming, and the court considered a report indicating that Crook still posed a threat to young girls aged 13 and older.

However, the judge clarified that Crook did not abuse or manipulate the girl through his role as a Scout leader.

Crook was sentenced to 14 years in prison, with consideration for release on licence, and is also required to register as a sex offender for life.
