RENE TRAVERS JAILS IN JERSEY FOR CHILD INDECENT IMAGES CRIME

In a recent court hearing held in the Royal Court of Jersey, a 38-year-old man named Rene Jean Pirouet Travers was sentenced to a prison term of 20 months after being found guilty of possessing a significant collection of indecent images of children.

The court emphasized that such offenses are far from victimless, highlighting the serious harm inflicted on victims and the broader societal implications.

Travers, a resident of St Clement in Jersey, was arrested in June of the previous year on suspicions related to child sexual grooming.

During the police search of his residence and digital devices, authorities uncovered a disturbing cache of material: over 140 still images and 92 videos depicting child exploitation.

The severity of the images was underscored by the fact that 19 of these movies were classified as Category 4, which is considered the second-highest level of severity in the classification system used to evaluate child sex abuse material.

The majority of the images, however, fell into lower categories, but their presence still represented a grave offense.

Prosecutor Crown Advocate Richard Pedley detailed that at the time of his arrest, Travers was suffering from severe alcohol withdrawal, necessitating hospitalization.

Although Travers was questioned about his involvement in child sexual grooming—particularly concerning a 13-year-old girl he had met—he was not formally charged with grooming.

The girl, who is well known to local agencies and has a history of going missing from her home at night, had maintained contact with Travers through Facebook.

Authorities expressed concern over this contact, citing her vulnerability and his alcohol abuse, but no formal charges related to grooming were filed.

The investigation revealed that Travers had actively searched for indecent images involving nine-year-olds and used an acronym known within paedophile circles to refer to pre-teen hardcore material.

Much of the content appeared to originate from Russian or Eastern European studios specializing in producing such exploitative images of children.

The social inquiry report prepared for the court indicated that Travers was at a high risk of reoffending sexually.

It also noted that he attempted to rationalize his viewing habits by claiming that many others had accessed similar material, thus excusing his behavior.

During sentencing, Deputy Bailiff Tim Le Cocq, alongside Jurats Sally Sparrow and Elizabeth Dulake, addressed the court, emphasizing the real harm caused to children subjected to violence and degradation through such offenses.

He stated, “You supported the environment and market in which the images were created,” underscoring the societal damage caused by these crimes.

In addition to the 20-month prison sentence for the possession of indecent images, Travers was ordered to register as a sex offender for a period of five years.

Furthermore, he is prohibited from being alone in the company of children under the age of 16 for the same duration.

The Deputy Bailiff explained that these restrictions were necessary due to the circumstances under which Travers’s offending was uncovered, aiming to protect vulnerable children from potential harm in the future.
