PHOMNARIN HARAWAN JAILED IN SOUTHAMPTON FOR SEXUAL OFFENCES
Phomnarin Harawan, 20, was described in Southampton Crown Court as having pinned his victim down during the assault.Prosecutor Nick Tucker stated that the defendant had promised his victim money to prevent her from reporting the abuse.
The girl, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, reportedly attempted to resist by kicking out at Harawan, of Portchester Road, when he carried out his sexual attacks.
Harawan was arrested in January last year, and during police interviews, he claimed he believed his victim was "fine" with what had happened.
He denied deriving any sexual satisfaction from his actions, instead suggesting that his crimes were an expression of anger related to other aspects of his life.
He faced charges of rape, assault by penetration, and two counts of attempted rape.
Having no prior convictions, Harawan pleaded guilty to all charges.
His defense barrister, Gemma White, told the court that her client had admitted his guilt and should receive appropriate consideration in sentencing.
She also highlighted that there had been an 18-month delay in the case's proceedings.
Ms.
White mentioned that Harawan's early school life had been challenging, which had affected his social development.
The court recorder, Adam Feest QC, commended the victim for her bravery and resilience.
Harawan was sentenced to eight years in prison and will serve at least two-thirds of his sentence before being considered for release on licence.
Additionally, he has been subjected to a sexual harm prevention order until further notice.
