PAUL CLARKE FROM MONMOUTHSHIRE SENTENCED FOR ABUSE IN CARDIFF CROWN COURT

In a deeply disturbing case that has shocked the local community, Paul Clarke, a 64-year-old resident of Pontypool, was convicted of heinous sexual offenses committed against a young girl.

The abuse took place when the victim was only 13 years old, and the case was brought to light after the victim, now an adult, decided to contact the police to report the crimes.

According to court proceedings held at Cardiff Crown Court, Clarke was found guilty of multiple counts of sexual assault, including acts of grooming, oral sex, and penetration using fingers and objects such as a glass bottle and a metal pump.

The court heard that Clarke employed manipulative tactics, including purchasing alcohol for the girl and convincing her to keep their meetings secret, thereby exerting control over her at a vulnerable age.

The court was told that Clarke attempted to appear younger by dressing like a member of a well-known boy band, a tactic he used to lure the young girl into trusting him.

The sentencing hearing revealed that Clarke first encountered the victim while waiting at a bus stop in the Blackwood area, where he was playing loud music from his car.

This initial contact eventually led to a series of abusive encounters that would leave lasting scars.

Judge Matthew Porter-Bryant, presiding over the case, described the severity of Clarke’s actions.

The defendant was convicted of ten counts of indecent assault, with the court noting that he had no previous relevant convictions.

Clarke’s residence on Albion Road was mentioned during the proceedings.

The victim, in a heartfelt personal statement read aloud by prosecutor Clare Wilks, described the profound and lasting impact of the abuse.

She expressed feelings of confusion about love, struggles with forming healthy relationships, and ongoing mental health issues such as depression, nightmares, and suicidal thoughts.

She stated, “The abuse I suffered affected my life in every way....

I don’t understand what love is....

I am trying to understand why this happened to me.

He took away my childhood and was forced to grow up.

The control of power he had over me stays with me to this day.

I have struggled to form healthy relationships and sex has always been a trigger for me.” She further added, “I carry abuse with me every day and I think about it.

Some days it hit me so hard I can’t get out of bed.

I have made attempts to end my life.

I was unable to go to work and on occasions I suffered with depression.

I just wanted a normal relationship with a partner and a normal family but Paul Clarke has taken that away from me.

I tried to move on but it doesn’t go away.

During the court proceedings I was anxious, had sleepless nights and nightmares of Paul Clarke and woke up.

I worried about attending court and of the effects repeating my experience would impact on my mental health.

I want to get past the abuse and learn to trust and love again.

I want to be happy and free.” In mitigation, defence barrister Martha Smith-Higgins highlighted Clarke’s otherwise law-abiding life since the offences, noting that he had lost his mother at age six and was unable to speak for seven years due to trauma.

She urged the court to consider a determinate sentence, acknowledging that Clarke faced an inevitable and lengthy custodial term.

Ultimately, Judge Porter-Bryant sentenced Clarke to nine years in prison.

Additionally, Clarke was ordered to comply with sex offender notification requirements for an indefinite period, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions to protect the community from further harm.
