PAUL BRYANT FROM BASELIDON CAUGHT IN HORRIFIC ONLINE CHILD GROOMING PLOT NEAR LITTLE HADHAM
In a disturbing case that has shocked the local community, Paul Bryant, a 40-year-old man from Dewsgreen, Basildon, was found guilty of engaging in heinous online child grooming activities. The incident unfolded after Bryant initiated contact with what he believed was a 15-year-old boy on the popular gay dating app Grindr. The conversation, which began on June 14, quickly took a sinister turn as Bryant bombarded the decoy with sexually explicit messages and even sent a graphic photograph of his erect penis, showing a blatant disregard for the age of the individual he believed he was communicating with.Throughout the exchanges, Bryant persistently asked the decoy about his age, explicitly stating, “How old are you? It’s clear you’re young,” despite being told that the person he was speaking to was only 15 years old. His continued explicit messaging included requests for photographs from the decoy, further demonstrating his intent. Unbeknownst to Bryant, the person he was communicating with was not a teenage boy but an undercover paedophile hunter operating under the alias CSE Interceptors, a non-profit group dedicated to investigating online child exploitation.
As the conversation progressed, Bryant sent two additional images—one depicting a male’s groin area with pants on, and another of a face that matched the Grindr profile he believed belonged to the young boy. The undercover investigator, posing as a young teenager, responded with a stock image of a supposed 14-year-old boy, to which Bryant replied, “Cute, so no pics in your underwear?” The decoy firmly declined, and the two agreed to meet in person at a church car park located in Crouch End, Little Hadham, Hertfordshire, around 2:30 pm.
Despite traveling a significant distance of 48 miles from his home in Basildon, Bryant arrived at the designated meeting spot. However, his plans were thwarted when police officers, who had been monitoring the situation, arrested him at the scene. The arrest marked the culmination of a two-day operation conducted by the CSE Interceptors group, which works closely with Hertfordshire police to track down individuals involved in online child exploitation.
During the subsequent court proceedings at Basildon Crown Court, Judge David Owen-Jones condemned Bryant’s actions in a stern and serious tone. The judge highlighted the reckless and dangerous nature of Bryant’s conduct, emphasizing that his intent was clearly to incite a 15-year-old boy into engaging in sexual activity. The judge pointed out that Bryant had explicitly asked the decoy’s age and had exchanged explicit photographs, including one of his own genitals, which underscored his predatory intentions.
In his remarks, Judge Owen-Jones stated, “What you did was extremely silly and dangerous. You were seeking to incite a boy of 15 to engage in sexual activity. You sent a message to this decoy posing as a 15-year-old then sending him a photograph of your penis. Sexualised conversation and photographs were then exchanged. You knew he was 15 because you asked him when he was 16. It was quite clear to me that you wished to have some sexual contact with that boy.”
Having pleaded guilty to attempting to meet a boy under 16 following grooming, Bryant was sentenced to 15 months in prison, suspended for two years. The court also ordered him to participate in the Horizon rehabilitation programme, complete 40 days of specified activities, and pay £200 in costs. Additionally, Bryant will be registered as a sex offender for five years and will be subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) for the same duration. These measures are part of the ongoing efforts to prevent further offending and protect the community from potential harm.
